Job Summary:
Reporting to the Executive Director of Leadership Giving, the Director of Major Gifts develops and implements a strategic plan to engage, cultivate, solicit, and steward alumnae capable of making gifts of $100,000 or higher. The Director is responsible for managing a portfolio of 125 donors/prospects and meeting established fundraising goals. The Director supervises a team of major gift officers and plays a supportive role in helping officers set and achieve their annual goals. The Director is a member of the Barnard Development team composed of Individual Giving, Major Giving, and Planned Giving.
Job Description:
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Under the direction of and in collaboration with the Executive Director of Leadership Giving, the Director develops and implements a strategic fundraising plan for the major gifts program including efforts to identify, engage, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors.
- Actively manage a portfolio of 125 alumnae capable of making six or seven figure gifts to support the College’s top funding priorities. Develop fundraising strategies for each prospective donor, send outreach emails and make phone calls, meet face-to-face with prospects, and travel as needed to build relationships with prospects and attend regional events.
- Supervise a team of major gift fundraisers by tracking annual fundraising progress and ensure a healthy pipeline of major gift prospects for years to come.
- Ensure gift officer portfolios are optimal in terms of size, capacity, geographic location; and that fundraisers actively engage prospects.
- Provide strategic direction and oversight of the parents fundraising program and supervision to the senior associate director of parent & family giving.
- Collaborate with the marketing and communications team to develop and execute comprehensive marketing efforts for the major gifts program; review reports and make recommendations to optimize giving through direct marketing channels.
- Partner with the prospect development team to review prospect research, recommend assignments, and conduct regular prospect strategy review with major gift officers.
- In partnership with the Business Analytics team, prepare and maintain activity and tracking reports and other summaries and reports as assigned.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

- The highest standards of professionalism and performance as evidenced by collaborative teamwork, initiative, critical thinking, good judgment, consistency of output, timeliness of follow-through, and strength of written and oral communication skills
- Knowledge of the principles of fundraising and a demonstrated track record of success
- Knowledge of and commitment to the values and mission of Barnard College and higher education

Qualifications:
- Minimum of seven years of relevant fundraising experience with progressively increasing levels of responsibility
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience required
- Proven success in soliciting and closing four, five, and six figure gifts
- Demonstrated ability to lead staff, mutually establish goals, and manage performance
- Analytical aptitude and facility with computer systems
- Ability and willingness to work outside of standard business hours, including some weekends and evenings, and to travel on occasion
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in Higher Education preferred
- Familiarity with branding, communications, and/or marketing
Additional Information:
This job is currently a hybrid position and may require a presence in the office up to five times a week, including for team and full staff meetings, events, and other times as directed by the supervisor.
Salary Range: $120,000 - 128,000 annually
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
