Costume Shop Assistant
Barrington Stage Company, an award-winning professional theatre company located in the heart of the Berkshires, is seeking a Costume Shop Assistant to join our team in Pittsfield, MA. This position assists the costume shop supervisor and associate supervisor and supports the costume staff for productions and events throughout the 2025 season. Responsibilities:
- Assist Costume Supervisor and Associate Costume Supervisor with pulling costumes from stock for fittings and rehearsals as needed
- Assist with researching costume availability from nearby and/or other regional theatres and costume rental houses as requested by the Costume Supervisor and Associate Supervisor.
- Accompany Costume Designer on local shopping trips as assigned
- In coordination with the Costume Designer and/or Costume Shop Supervisor, submit requests and assist in purchasing clothes, shoes, accessories, supplies, notions and fabric, tools, and materials.
- Assist with tracking expenditures for each show including check requests, credit or debit card purchases, petty cash expenditures, and credits from returns. Keep all receipts and invoices organized.
- Assist Costume Supervisor, Associate Costume Supervisor, and Costume Designer during tech rehearsals, keep accurate and up-to-date notes as needed, and help deliver costume pieces to and from the shop and theater
- Assist in maintaining the costume “bible” for each show including photos of each final look, fabric samples if constructed in the shop, notes on type and color of dye if used on garments, photos of jewelry and accessories, and where costumes were rented, borrowed or purchased along with the measurement sheet for each cast member as directed by Costume Supervisor and Associate Costume Supervisor.
- Help keep costume shop and costume storage areas clean and free of debris.
- Help maintain a safe and healthy work environment. Follow all health and safety guidelines established by the theatre. Report any unsafe conditions or practices to your supervisor immediately.
- Make returns of unused garments to vendors.
- Return rented and borrowed costumes and assist with restocking items in costume storage
Skills:
- Great communication and organizational skills and strong attention to detail
- Knowledge of costume history and period
- Working knowledge of costume construction techniques and materials
- Working knowledge of costume shop tools and equipment
- Online research and purchasing experience
- Accounting experience tracking expenses and credits
- Knowledge of locations and inventories of local fabric and clothing stores
- Able to lift at least 30 lbs.
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record
This position reports to the Costume Shop Supervisor and Associate Costume Shop Supervisor. It is a full-time, seasonal position.
Contract: 4/21/2025-9/21/2025.
Salary of $746.15 per week, non-exempt, with housing included.
