Overview

Our long-term client relationship with KBR has led to a need for an Extravehicular Activities (EVA) Operations Flight Controller on the Integrated Mission Operations Contract II (IMOC II) contract at Johnson Space Center (Houston, TX).

 

The Integrated Mission Operations Contract II (IMOC II) provides support and products for spaceflight operations capability development and execution for the Mission Operations Directorate, the International Space Station Program – including the Avionics and Software Office, and the Flight Crew Operations Directorate at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. This includes support to mission preparation, crew, flight controller, instructor, and analyst training, as well as real-time mission execution activities related to exploration operations and space station operations.  Operations capability development support is required as NASA defines requirements associated with the emerging options for the exploration initiatives and potential new programs, including – but not limited to – the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle Program, the Space Launch Systems Program, the Lunar Precursor Robotics Program, the Human Research Program, the Exploration Technology Program, the Commercial Crew Program, commercial cargo, and advanced technology and research.

Responsibilities

The Extravehicular Activities (EVA) Operations Flight Controller as a member of the EVA, Robotics and Mechanical Systems Organization will:

  • Support NASA Flight Operations Directorate at the Johnson Space Center in the Extravehicular Activity (EVA) discipline.
  • Become certified as an Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) Systems or EVA Task crew instructor.
  • Become certified at the Mission Planning and Support Room (MPSR) position in Mission Control Center (MCC), eventually leading to certification at the Flight Control Room (FCR) position.
  • Function as the operations lead for EVA missions, providing all planning, development and integration.
  • Interact frequently with diverse organizations requiring development of close working relationships facilitated by good interpersonal skills.
  • Provide technical and high level presentations to a variety of panels and forums.
  • Participate in and contribute to group efforts to streamline and upgrade technical and administrative processes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • BS Degree in Science or Engineering, from an accredited engineering school, college or university.

- OR -

  • Currently enrolled in a BS Degree program in Science or Engineering from an accredited engineering school, college or university with an anticipated graduation no later than December 2022.
  • Must have a technical background and a good understanding of engineering principles and the ability to apply them to real-time operations.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, demonstrated initiative, outstanding organizational skills, the ability to participate in a team environment, and the ability to function well under pressure.
  • Must have excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership, teamwork, technical, and administrative skills.
  • Must have strong multi-tasking/work prioritization skills.
  • Must be proficient in Windows and Microsoft applications.
  • Must be able to meet JSC requirements for certification as a Flight Controller.
  • Able to work in a dynamic environment with the ability to work effectively both alone and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, lead, and coordinate a wide range of tasks.
  • Night, weekend, and Holiday work may be required for integrated simulations and flight support.
  • Must be able to support infrequent travel domestically or internationally.
  • Attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and strict adherence to deadlines with the ability to successfully work/negotiate daily with multiple customers.
  • A team-focus and be able to adapt quickly to a highly collaborative efforts across multiple organizations.
  • Ability to apply technical knowledge and operations concepts to exercise effective decision making and initiative in a real-time and fast-paced operational environment.
  • Demonstrated skills of a self-starter who excels in a dynamic environment that requires him/her to work effectively both alone or as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively receive and give feedback while maintaining a positive attitude.

  • 0-2 years of related experience.

 

 

Essential Requirements 

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.

  • Must have sufficient mobility to enter areas of test facilities where necessary.
  • Generally an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
  • Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, fax, etc.)
  • Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical.
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
  • Must be able to work in a team atmosphere.
  • Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation.
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
  • This position may require some commuting and traveling to other installations as needed.
