What are the responsibilities and job description for the Traffic Control Specialist/Flagger position at Barron County?
THIS POSITION WORKS 6 MONTHS OR LESS (MAY 20TH TO NOVEMBER). MONDAY-THURSDAY 6A-4P SCHEDULE.
Position Purpose: Under the general supervision of the Operations Manager and Foreman, this position provides traffic control for highway/bridge maintenance and construction projects. Other duties may be assigned such as cutting grass/weeds/brush, maintaining road surfaces, helping with snow removal operations and performing other work as required.
Examples of Essential Job Functions - 100%
- Safely operate pickup truck with traffic control trailer while traveling to and from assigned work zones.
- Perform traffic control duties including setting up traffic control devices, daily inspection of traffic control setups, flagging work zones, maintaining devices, moving devices and tear down of traffic control setups.
- Communicate with supervisors and other highway operators to coordinate traffic control operations.
- Identify required traffic control devices for each work zone setup.
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance to assigned machinery and equipment as directed.
- Respond to weather situations including high water, washouts and others as directed.
- Respond to unforeseen emergency situations including cargo spills, traffic accidents, blocked roads, pavement buckles and others as directed.
- Maintain shop yard and grounds including mowing, trimming, sweeping and shoveling.
- Operate assigned vehicles and tools for highway and bridge construction and maintenance.
- Work with supervisor and other employees to ensure that traffic control is in place per standards.
- As needed, may be assigned to cut weeds and/or brush with tractor mowers and/or operate a variety of equipment to maintain roads.
- Conduct daily inspections and service to pickup trucks and equipment.
- Must be available for overtime work.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements of Work: Must have high school diploma or equivalent. Possess and maintain a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License. Experience in highway road construction trades is preferred. Wisconsin Flagging certification training is required and will be provided upon hire. Knowledge of the operation of related highway maintenance equipment along with safety precautions necessary to avoid accidents and remain safe while working or property damage in the operation of equipment. Ability to skillfully operate pickup trucks/equipment. Ability to establish effective working relationships with others. Ability to maintain accurate and complete records and prepare clear and detailed reports as needed. Ability to understand written and verbal instructions. Ability to work the hours needed for the position and be available for overtime work.
Physical and Environmental Factors: Ability to lift 50 to 100 pounds occasionally and 25 to 50 pounds frequently is required. Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, and kneeling required. Ability to work outdoors with exposure to outdoor elements (hot, cold, wet, etc.)
