What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part-time Kennel Technician position at Barrow County BOC?
This position is responsible for the maintenance and care of impounded animals as well as customer service tasks. This job is a safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Barrow County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace.

- Cleans kennels daily.
- Distributes medicine multiple times each day.
- Processes incoming animals; sets up kennels.
- Feeds animals, washes dishes, and cleans laundry.
- Helps with radio and dispatching calls; enters dispatches in log.
- Shows animals to potential adopters.
- Manages paperwork for adoptions, reclaims, and rescues.
- Supervises community service.
- Vaccinates animals; performs diagnostic testing.
- Conducts off-site adoption events.
- Calculates monthly statistics; maintains vaccine inventory.
- Sets up and maintains contacts for cat litter boxes; retrieves litter boxes from local businesses.
- Conducts temperament tests for dogs for adoption and rescue.
- Enters calls into multi-ops computer system.
- Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge animal behavior and basic animal husbandry.
- Skill in basic computer operations.
- Skill in customer service tasks.
- Skill in the proper use of Catchpole, Bite Stick, and other equipment.
- Skill in interpersonal communications.
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes a sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in an office, library, computer room, or a very noisy place. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and contagious or infectious diseases or irritating chemicals. The work is performed outdoors and occasionally in cold or inclement weather and requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.
