What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Attorney position at Barry County Trial Court?
· Represents the Barry County Trial Court in all collection matters.
· Informs and educates the court staff of new legislation, court rules and procedure, case law and SCAO policies as it relates to the collection and enforcement of unpaid balances.
· Collects and maintains data as it relates to the amounts assessed by the Barry County Trial Court Judges. Ensures accuracy of information entered into the Court’s computer systems. Collects and obtains data to create a monthly report of amounts assessed and collected by each Court on a monthly basis.
· Establishes child support and paternity referrals received from the State of Michigan Office of Child Support.
· Utilizes MiCSES to retrieve Court Action Referrals. Reviews CARs to determine if required elements are met to file legal action.
· Manages paternity establishment cases from the initial CAR, service of process, to the entry of final judgment. Ensures court laws and rules are followed through the establishment process.
· Participates in trainings to ensure continued knowledge in establishment of child support and/or paternity.
· Provides legal representation for Friend of the Court. Researches and interprets legislation, court rules, administrative policies and case law as it pertains to domestic relations, intergovernmental cases, collections, and bankruptcy.
· Completes various special projects, which require professional legal skills, as requested by a Trial Court Judge or the Friend of the Court.
· Represents the Friend of the Court in show cause hearings for non-payment of support, parenting time, and medical support.
· Prepares and appears in court on motions on behalf of the Friend of the Court as needed.
· Reviews files to determine proper service prior to requesting the issuance of a bench warrant.
· Reviews and approves Judgments of Divorce and other domestic orders submitted by attorneys and pro per parties to ensure compliance with IV-D Policy, Michigan Court Rules, and Statutes.
· Reviews, investigates and determines legal actions on individual cases.
· Performs related work as required.
