What are the responsibilities and job description for the Temporary to Permanent Caretaker/Grounds Maintenance Worker to live on Island position at Bartlett Island Generations LLC?
The Caretaker worker must be willing to live on-island year-round and must be able to operate boats to/from the island under most weather conditions. In addition, the Caretaker will be provided with housing as part of the total compensation package.
The primary responsibility of the interim caretaker includes boat transportation for the crew and family members, ensuring that the roads are drivable (clear of snow and debris), and tending to the island homes and equipment when the rest of the crew is off duty (in a power outage, for example).
Ideally, the Interim Caretaker would also work as a Grounds Maintenance Worker with the rest of the team, making this a full-time position.
This is a Temporary to Permanent position. Therefore, upon hire, there will be an initial three to six month probationary/trial period allowing both the employer and employee to assess the suitability of the role and employment relationship.
Caretaker Responsibilities:
· Provide boat transportation for crew, family members and guests
· Put boats on moorings to protect them from inclement weather
· Ensure the road from the boat house to the farm is drivable (clear road of snow and debris).
· Plowing during weekends in winter
· Checking on buildings and equipment during storms or when the crew is off duty.
· Generally overseeing the safety and security of the island while the crew is off-duty
Grounds Maintenance Responsibilities:
· Care for gardens, lawns, shrubs, trees and containers including planting, brushing, staking, tying, watering, weeding, deadheading, pruning, dividing perennials and clearing deadwood.
· Assist with pest and disease control, rake trail and field paths, collect leaves, brush and boughs, and prepare garden beds for winter.
· Maintain established lawns - mowing, raking, seeding, and amending soil.
· Maintenance and care of all buildings and vehicles, including seasonal openings and closings.
· Assist with boat launches and other boating related projects.
· Assist with interior home maintenance.
· Maintain job-related groundskeeping equipment (e.g. routine repairs, minor adjustments, etc.) and ensure safe and proper operating conditions.
· Assist with woods work including clearing blow downs, fallen dead trees, processing firewood and kindling, and burning brush.
· Winter projects, as necessary, include snow removal from docks, buildings, roads and residential areas.
Additional responsibilities related to residents, special events and transportation:
· Help prepare residential areas for occupancy and perform household chores.
· Provide transportation for guests and assist caterers during special events.
· Operate small boats to/from the island under most weather conditions as well as clean/maintain boats/vehicles.
· Occasional errands and be flexible to assist wherever needed.
Desired Qualities and Skills:
· A welcoming and personable demeaner.
· An appreciation for the ecological values of the island and the sustainability goals of the family.
· Light mechanical skills for repairs to fleet, power tools, boats, and small engines. General understanding of plumbing, electricity, and painting.
· Proficiency with heavy machinery (backhoe, pulp loader, farm tractor) as well as power equipment and hand tools (chain saw, hand saw and pruner).
· Must be able to operate boats and ideally the barge, as well.
· Comfortable around the water and capable of swimming
· Must be capable of doing physically strenuous labor and move heavy objects (50-75 lbs.), in all weather conditions.
· Self-motivated; must be able to work independently and as a member of a team.
· Certified in CPR/First Aid, a plus.
· Valid driver’s license
Salary is commensurate with experience.
The hours of work and days are generally Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
