Position Purpose

Along with the general hands-on duties of a journeyman, the Sheet Metal Field Foreman provides leadership, and has responsibility for scheduling, coordinating, supervising and ensuring the safety and productivity of the work crews who install HVAC, Industrial Vent, Structural Steel, Food Process and related projects at customer sites.

  • Meet with the ops manager, project manager, project engineer, estimators and related parties to review specifications, submittals, drawings, and other related materials to understand the nature and scope of the project, determine the materials to be utilized, manpower requirements for each phase, equipment and tool needs, etc.
  • Develop fabrication sheets/layouts for all required shop fabrications.
  • Requisition needed tools, jobsite equipment and logistics and related materials for the project.
• Task Scheduling – Plan the daily and weekly activities for the work crew.  Provide detailed technical instructions to ensure a clear understanding of the work, the methods, resources, and expected completion timeframe.
• Safety – Responsible for performing ongoing jobsite safety and hazard assessments, safety orientation for any new hires, and accountable for the safety of the crew.  Ensures that all workers follow and adhere to all safety standards required by OSHA, Bassett and the customer.  Duties may include safety tool box talks, submitting SIO’s, BBS, incident reports and investigations, etc.
• Compliance - Ensures that all construction activities follow plans, specifications, drawings, and contract documents for the project as identified and communicated by the project manager, engineer, or owner.
• Scheduling/Coordination – Performs frequent coordination with other trades, subcontractors, and owner to ensure construction activities are on schedule, within budget, and maximizes timing of the various job stages.
• Job Cost Awareness – Investigates reasons for delays in the construction schedule, consults and communicates with the project manager/ops manager on a regular basis, and adjusts appropriate factors as needed. 
• Administration – Responsible for the preparation and submission of various reports and paperwork in a timely fashion including daily project reports, daily safety plans, time cards, labor tracking, etc.
• Communication - 
  • Attends meetings with customers and/or general contractors, facilitates job meetings with crews as needed.
  • Establishes and maintains a good working relationship with owners, general contractors, architects/engineers, consulting firms and other parties as dictated by project.  Attempts to resolve day-to-day problems through direct negotiations with concerned individuals.
  • Meets with client representatives to identify new requests, project changes, and document and manage change orders effectively.           
• Quality Control – Understands the importance of quality workmanship and continually takes proactive measures to ensure all construction activities meet or exceed corporate and client requirements and standards.
• Leadership and Supervision – The foreman leads the crew and is accountable for how the crew completes the assigned work; sets and maintains work standards, outlines expectations for behavior, promotes, supports and facilitates teamwork and harmony, and fosters a positive attitude among all crews.  During daily work assignments, utilizes the opportunity to teach, train and coach workers on all aspects of the trade and the project.
• Job Close-Out - Performs a variety of tasks associated with the completion of a project, including close-out punch lists, system start-up, testing, paperwork, labeling, demobilization, as-built documents, tool/material inventory and return, etc.
