What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bilingual Agricultural Safety Educator - Western New York Region position at Bassett Medical Center?
The Bilingual Agricultural Safety Educator (ASE) is an English/Spanish speaking person responsible for implementing occupational health education and safety programs for the agricultural community. Education and training efforts will include but are not limited to providing: on farm safety audits, agricultural safety trainings on all types of agricultural hazards, curriculum translation, Basic First Aid and CPR trainings and consultations with farm owners and managers. The ASE serves as a technical consultant for occupational safety issues in the agricultural industry, writes educational articles for numerous agricultural publications, and assists in the development of new curriculum. The ASE will also actively participate in trade shows and outreach events and will support the sale of personal protective equipment (PPE) and installation of power take off (PTO) Shielding. The ASE will work with the agricultural community, legislators, educators, researchers and Bassett Healthcare Network staff to support the mission of NYCAMH.
- Conducts farm safety audits to identify areas of concern, and areas not in compliance with OSHA regulations
- Conducts consultations with farm owners and safety officers on hazards identified in safety audits, provides support to farm owners in completing necessary forms and paperwork
- Coordinate and deliver youth specific programming
- Completes written reports outlining audit outcomes and provides these to the farm owners/managers and granting agencies
- Delivers agricultural education and safety programs on a wide variety of farm safety topics in English and Spanish
- Develops pertinent lesson plans in English and Spanish and compiles them into a curriculum as needed
- Designs and implements demonstrations and teaching aids in English and Spanish
- Assist in creating and designing outreach material in English and Spanish for promotional and training purposes
- Generates educational resources in English and Spanish for distribution to farm safety and health educators
- Maintains working knowledge of issues relevant to agricultural safety and health
- Provides technical assistance and consultation relevant to agricultural safety and health
- Teaches farm safety and health, and emergency response-related programs and classes to students of all ages in English and Spanish
- Speaks at professional engagements regarding farm safety and health
- Seeks out and establishes new avenues to promote farm safety and health
- Establishes working relationships with farm employers, agribusinesses, and other organizations to broaden contact base
- Builds on existing professional relationships to expand educational opportunities
- Represents NYCAMH in professional organizations
- Attends meetings and is actively involved in farm safety and health organizations
- Assists in preparation of reports for funding agencies such as NYS DOL and NIOSH
- Train and assist farm employers to administer farm safety programs
- Publicizes and promotes NYCAMH’s work and research findings
- Writes articles for agriculture related magazines, journals, periodicals and newspapers
- Facilitates displays and presentations
- Conducts radio and speaking engagements if opportunities are presented
- Assists in design of evaluation strategies
- Assists in design of evaluation instruments in English and Spanish
- Assists in collection of evaluation data in English and Spanish
- Assists in re-design of programs based upon evaluation findings
- Occupational health service delivery responsibilities-translation for farmworker health screenings, hearing conservation and fit-testing activities in English and Spanish, as well as service provision
- Perform screenings using appropriate equipment and established protocols
- Assure quality of all screening protocols, individual results and group reports
- Maintain documentation required to ensure accurate, precise test results
- Travel vouchers for work-related travel are processed on time
- Actively supports the PPE Sales program
- Regular attendance at NYCAMH staff meetings
- Assist other cores in their work as needed
- Performs other duties as requested and observed by management

4 Year/Bachelor's Degree, required
- experience may be considered in lieu of education
- Master's Degree in agricultural or educational field, preferred
- 2 years' experience with agriculture or related field, required
- Working knowledge of farm machinery and farm practices, preferred
- Valid NYS Driver's License with responsible driving record, required
- NYS Teaching Certificate, preferred
- Completion of Defensive Drive Course within one month from date of hire, required
- OSHA training certifications, preferred
- First Aid, CPR, and Stop the Bleed certification, preferred
