Responsibilities:
The Medical Oncology Nurse Clinician functions as a team member of the Bassett Regional Cancer Program and Bassett Physician Group, delivering nursing care to patients with cancer and related diseases. Assesses and triages patients accurately and thoroughly, ensures the safety of patients, and provides support and guidance for patients and family members throughout treatment and the survivorship experience. Contributes to community education in the control, recognition, treatment and rehabilitation of the patient, as well as the education of family, community, and hospital staff as appropriate. Participates in medical and nursing research as indicated. This individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and disease status of the patients served. Must demonstrate the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status, identify each patient’s requirements relevant to his/her needs, and provide the appropriate care.

- Assesses patients and reviews lab data to assure values within prescribed parameters prior to all treatment as documented in nursing notes and/or flow sheets as confirmed on random quarterly chart audits.
- Analyzes assessment data to identify patient problems, with no more than 2-3 exceptions, as measured by random supervisory chart review and/or direct supervisory observation.
- Identifies expected outcomes individualized to the patient, with no more than 2-3 exceptions, as measured by random supervisory chart review and/or direct supervisory observation.
- Implements and records interventions appropriate to diagnosis or patient problem, with no more than 2-3 exceptions, as measured by random supervisory chart review and/or direct supervisory observation.
- Provides appropriate teaching to 100% of patients and their family including written educational information re: disease, treatment regimen, supportive care, etc. as documented in the medical record.
- Counsels patients for treatment side effects and symptom management either by telephone triage and/or at time of clinic visits as documented in the medical record as measured by random supervisory chart review and/or direct supervisory observation.
- In certain circumstances will be trained in the mixing of chemotherapeutic agents for appropriated therapeutic delivery for patient care in the absence of a pharmacist.
- Participates in clinical research by performing required assessments and data collection and documenting the medical record and flow sheets and confirmed by chart audit of 100% of patients on clinical trials receiving chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy.
- Advocates for patients to ensure that care preserves and protects the patient’s autonomy, dignity and rights.
- Delivers care in a non-judgmental and non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to patient diversity, 100% of the time, as measured by no significant, substantiated patient or peer complaints received by the manager/supervisor.
- Assures that patients have informed consent signed for chemotherapy, 100% of the time, as measured by random supervisory chart
review.
- Acquires and maintains current knowledge and skills in his or her area of practice.
- Provides to supervisor evidence of completion of PC-based age-specific competency education for targeted age groups within the previous calendar year.
- Participates in 20-30 hours of educational activity related to job function annually and provides documented evidence of attendance or activity to supervisor.
- Demonstrates clinical problem-solving ability through written exemplar, patient/family feedback, co-worker report or direct managerial observation.
- Demonstrates operational problem-solving ability through written exemplar, co-worker report or direct managerial observation.
- Participates in the Operational/Regulatory activities of the Regional Cancer Program.
- Designs and coordinates PI initiative demonstrating good organizational skills and follow-through as determined by direct managerial observation.
- Attends at least 80% of staff meetings (both CTC and Nursing) as recorded on the attendance roster.
- Assists in the development, review and revision of the Regional Cancer Program Nursing Policies and Procedures as requested by supervisor.
- Performs similar or related duties as requested or directed

Education:
- 2 year / Associate Degree in Nursing, required or...
- Vocational / Technical Diploma Professional Nursing Program, required or...
- 4 year / Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, preferred

- LPN sign on bonuses are awarded in the amount of $10,000 for full time
