Bat Conservation International (BCI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to ending bat extinctions worldwide, seeks two Project Coordinators to join BCI’s Science Team. BCI is a distributed organization with staff across the world and incorporated in Austin, TX. BCI is a global leader on finding solutions that support renewable wind energy development while reducing its impacts on bat populations. Over the past two decades, BCI’s wind-energy program has designed and executed ground-breaking evidence-based scientific work that leads to meaningful outcomes.

The Project Coordinators must be highly collaborative and enjoy working within an environment that is mission and results-driven, where they can bring their whole self to work and contribute to positive ecological and social change. This position is ideal for early-career scientists interested in applied conservation with interest and experience conducting rigorous scientific research, managing, and coordinating collaborative research projects, and communicating with diverse stakeholders.

Position Description :

This opportunity is for two Project Manager positions. Each will lead a 3-year project investigating potential bat fatality reduction measures at wind energy facilities. While Project Coordinators can live anywhere and will work remotely, each Project Coordinator will be responsible for on-site field research at a wind energy facility for approximately July through September. Housing will be provided during fieldwork.

One project coordinator will assist with a study examining the use of ultraviolet light to deter bats from interacting with wind turbines. This study will record bat activity at turbines in southern Michigan using acoustics and thermal video. The second project coordinator will assist in a project examining the response of bats to the use of Aircraft Detection Lighting System using acoustics and radar. This project will be conducted in eastern South Dakota.

The Project Manager(s) will :

  • Manage project, including tracking deliverables and reports, and ensuring all products are executed in a timely manner
  • Lead and conduct fieldwork (approx. July–September) involving acoustic recording and thermal video or radar
  • Manage, process, and curate data
  • Ensure all research and products are reproducible, repeatable, and rigorous
  • Participate in the dissemination results of research in presentations, reports, and peer-reviewed publications
  • Collaborate effectively with BCI team members and external project partners, including wind energy industry representatives and the Dept. of Energy.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications :

Required Knowledge / Experience

  • B.S. degree in a relevant field such as biology, ecology, wildlife, conservation, or related field plus 1 year experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects
  • Experience in acoustic monitoring and acoustic data processing
  • Working knowledge of bat acoustic technology hardware and software
  • Ability to identify and solve technological issues such as computer and camera malfunctions
  • Proficiency in data management
  • Demonstrated interest in hypothesis-driven research and applied conservation
  • Proven success with managing multiple tasks / projects simultaneously and accurately with attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize under the pressure of deadlines
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels of staff, government agencies, industry, landowners, and other partners
  • Experience and / or interest in engaging with the full range of communities within conservation
  • Valid US driver’s License
  • Preferred Knowledge / Experience

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field and 1 year experience
  • Familiarity with bat ecology and wind energy issues
  • Statistical analyses, including use of Program R
  • Desire to contribute to data analysis
  • Proficiency in scientific writing and written communication skills

  • 55,000-$65,000 annually (depending on experience), full-time salaried. Paid biweekly electronically or via check.
