POSITION SUMMARY
The Machine Operator: Shredder Lead Operator reports to the Shift Supervisor and oversees the duties of the assigned machine and production cell area; to include shared accountability for production output and quality of product produced by the machine at the work cell, including training, oversight, and guidance of lesser trained operators within the cell. The Machine Operator: Shredder Lead Operator is responsible for managing labor on the shift for the machine and production cell, monitoring 2nd and 3rd Machine Operator performance, and assisting with the maintenance of training records in accordance with Bata Plastics’ policies and procedures. The Machine Operator: Shredder Lead Operator participates in problem solving, employee engagement and addressing issues within the machine, in the cell, and on the line. This role supports tracking run order status and assuring accurate product identification. Observes and qualifies plastics introduced to the sort table. Observes the manufacturing process and partners with the Team Lead and Foreperson/Supervisor to react to countermeasure errors affecting quality and efficiency. Coordinates and communicates with the Forklift Operator: Pitch driver for new material at the belt, and the Forklift Operator: Catch driver for removal of material from the production cell. Completes production paperwork and reviews run orders, performs product inspections, and communicates effectively with the Team Lead and Shift Foreperson/Supervisor. The Machine Operator: Shredder Lead Operator must be able to perform all 2nd and 3rd Machine Operator duties as required (see Machine Operator job descriptions).
PERFORMANCE ACCOUNTABILITY
This position requires high performance in the following areas:
- Maintain labor utilization above minimum expected level and no “operator downtime” below maximum expected level
- Monitor performance metrics and identify areas for improvement to maintain a high level of quality
- Communicate potential quality issues to leadership and work collaboratively to find solutions
- Track the performance of Machine Operators and assist with completion of annual reviews
- Ensure that all Machine Operators are trained and have current training records
ESSENTIAL TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead, coach and provide effective feedback to Machine Operators; also support change initiatives and assist management with communicating and implementing the changes.
- Oversee and coordinate aspects of the production area workflow (i.e. people and materials) to meet run order and master schedule requirements.
- Coordinate work assignments within the production cell; that includes training, maintenance support and/or process/trouble shooting support. Assign labor within production cell based on labor standards, operator qualifications, and machine scheduling priorities
- Coordinate break schedules and assist with machine operation during breaks; ensuring machine up-time throughout shift
- * Work with internal resources to resolve problems (Team Lead, Shift Supervisor, Production Manager, Operations Manager, HR, EHS, Quality Manager, etc.).
- Communicate with the Forklift Operator: Pitch driver to ensure material adherence to the run order
- Observe and qualify scrap plastic introduced onto the sort table
- Remove all plastic that does not match with the run orders.
- Communicate with the Forklift Operator: Catch driver for timely feedback on processed material quality
- Clearly communicate production/quality/material issues with Team Lead and Shift Supervisor
- Perform and document material dispositions
- Clear minor jams and any machine malfunctions
- Utilize and operate hand tools such as grinders, saws-all, and basic hand tools.
- Ensure all processes are followed as documented to ensure adherence to the ISO standard
- Ensure adherence to department policies, procedures, regulatory compliance, and environmental health and safety requirements
- Coordinate and lead cleaning, organizing, and sweeping production work cell, including underneath all machinery and conveyor belts, as well as Hilo box banding area to comply with the 5s lean principals
- Provide input into procedures
- Contributes to Machine Operator evaluations
- Accurately complete all required paperwork and forms
- Assists employees in resolving production cell conflicts
- Responsible for the paperwork to start up and shut down their line or production cell
- Additional duties as assigned by the Shift Supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:
- High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Two (2) years plastics manufacturing or recycling related experience preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Basic computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office preferred.
Knowledge, or an Aptitude and Willingness to Learn or obtain:
- Lock-out and Confined Space training (provided by Bata Plastics)
- Hilo & Scissor Lift training (provided by Bata Plastics)
- Hand Tool training (provided by Bata Plastics)
- Plastics 101 - 109 (provided by Bata Plastics)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for prolong periods of time; continually use hands to finger, handle, and grab; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to walk; climb, stoop and crouch; talk; and hear. The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this job includes the ability to visually identify product not meeting quality standards.
- Use hands to operate equipment, write, finger, handle, feel, reach with both hand and arm. Talk and hear. As needed, walk all areas of the plant from department to department. Physical demands are consistent for those found in a warehouse and production environment.
- Noise level is moderate to heavy and typical of a warehouse and production environment for the Plastics Recycling industry.
- Overtime, which may include weekends, will be required as necessary.
