What are the responsibilities and job description for the CHILD STUDIES INSTRUCTOR position at Bates Technical College?
Childcare Centers Worker Training includes work-site training at affiliated centers, on-campus courses, and online courses for Childcare workers.
This is a 214/7 non-tenure track faculty position.
Essential Functions
- Provide classroom and lab instruction utilizing a variety of teaching techniques to prepare students that work at Child Care Education Centers and Cooperative Preschools.
- Create, implement, and modify curriculum as required to meet learning outcomes.
- Develop and deliver developmentally appropriate on-site trainings to child care centers and/or cooperative preschools.
- Conduct Early Childhood Education Courses on campus, in a hybrid format or online for early childhood staff in child care centers and/or cooperative preschools.
- Create and maintain an atmosphere of professionalism and mutual respect with students.
- Utilize online learning management system and incorporate multiple modalities into curriculum planning and delivery instruction.
- Assess and provide feedback on student competencies.
- Submit student grades in a timely manner.
- Support College student achievement practices to ensure student retention, completion, and progression.
- Work with staff, instructors and support services personnel to ensure a cohesive learning environment.
- Participate actively and collaboratively in student recruitment.
- Develop and/or maintain industry-based program accreditation, and ensure students are prepared for and have the opportunity to obtain relevant industry credentials and certifications.
- Deliver classroom management to maintain suitable learning environment by responding appropriately to student conduct/problems and provide assistance in solving them in accordance with college procedures.
- Provide budget management which includes requisition and maintenance control of and safeguard inventories of equipment and supplies assigned to the program.
- Ensure instruction is consistent with current industry standards.
- Participate on committees, task forces, and councils in support of department and college goals and objectives.
- Assist with the preparation of grant or funding requests as needed.
- Prepare reports as needed.
Non-Essential/Other Functions
- Actively contribute to and participate in college-wide activities in support of regional accreditation and state and federal requirements.
- Support College student achievement practices to ensure student retention, completion, and progression.
- Participate actively and collaboratively with College Student Services and program advisory committees to support access to employment opportunities for students, and maintain student job placement records.
- Accountable for keeping personal development up-to-date; adding to skills and knowledge through courses that may be available through the Bates Technical College courses, professional development committees, etc.
- Participate actively and collaboratively on committees for college as needed including but not limited to staff recruitment, college councils, etc.
- Document and keep records of student competency performance, attendance in accordance to program policies and college policies.
- Participate in program promotion events, program information sessions and other program marketing activities.
- Additional activities, duties and responsibilities may be added with or without notice to meet college needs
Supervisory Responsibilities
- This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Conditions of Employment

- This position is required to work on campus, at affiliated childcare centers and cooperative preschools.
- This position has been designated as a bargaining unit position represented by Bates Technical College local union.
- Following date of hire, all full-time faculty and all part-time faculty working two-thirds of a full-time load for more than three quarters (20 hours per week) must obtain. Professional-Technical Education Certificate within 30 working days.
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License.
- Personal vehicle required for work.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or closely related field
- Two (2) years of experience in Early Childhood Education
Allowable Substitution
If necessary, alternative combinations of education and experience may be evaluated by the Human Resources Office for comparability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five (5) years of experience in Early Childhood Education
- Two (2) years of experience volunteering or working with a Cooperative Preschool
- Training and experience teaching online courses
