Job Summary This faculty role for our new AAS in Community Services and Public Safety is focused on delivering high-quality instruction in the areas of law enforcement, public safety, and community services, starting Fall 2025, for up to 35 hours a week, depending on program needs. The program aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for entry to mid-level roles in fields such as law enforcement, firefighting, 911 dispatch, and social services. The faculty will support students in developing critical skills like judgment, problem-solving, communication, conflict resolution, and cultural competency, while fostering a learning environment that emphasizes professionalism, ethics, and relevant technologies. The role includes developing and teaching courses, mentoring students, and contributing to program development and community partnerships with agencies such as law enforcement, social service providers, and emergency services. Additionally, the faculty will assist in building experiential learning opportunities and facilitate student success in securing employment in community services and public safety careers.

Essential Functions
  • Teach assigned courses and provide high quality instruction in a variety of delivery methods, including face-to-face, web-enhanced, hybrid, and online, hours include afternoon and evening classes to accommodate working individuals.
  • Provide hands-on learning experiences, integrating industry best practices in public safety, emergency management, and community service roles.
  • Guide students in understanding laws, agencies involved, and ethical considerations in public safety and community service operations.
  • Collaborate with industry partners to align the curriculum with workforce needs.
  • Support student exploration and development toward career pathways in emergency management, public safety administration, human services and/or behavioral health, and community service leadership.
  • Participate in curriculum development and continuous improvement to ensure courses remain aligned with evolving industry standards and best practices.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues and students.
  • Provide each student with clear course expectations, evaluations and timelines through carefully written topical outlines and approved standardized syllabus.
  • Support college student achievement practices to ensure student retention, completion, and progression.
  • Provide interesting and relevant assignments for students that demonstrate learning outcomes in a real-life setting.
  • Respond to student questions on a timely basis.
  • Provide individual and small group instruction to students in a classroom setting, utilizing available technology.
  • Ensure that individual, lab, and small group instruction is based on the best available education practices, meet standards for content, and is relevant to students’ career goals.
  • Maintain student and curriculum records i.e. student progress and attendance, instructional syllabi, course curriculum and plans, and grades.
  • Ensure students are prepared for and can obtain relevant industry credentials and certifications. 
  • Deliver classroom management to maintain suitable learning environment by responding appropriately to student conduct/problems and provide assistance in solving them in accordance with college procedures.
  • Provide budget management which includes requisition and maintenance control of and safeguard inventories of equipment and supplies assigned to the program.

Non-Essential/Other Functions
  • Actively contribute to and participate in college-wide activities in support of regional accreditation and state and federal requirements. 
  • Support College student achievement practices to ensure student retention, completion, and progression.
  • Participate actively and collaboratively with College Student Services and program advisory committees to support access to employment opportunities for students, and maintain student job placement records.
  • Accountable for keeping personal development up-to-date; adding to skills and knowledge through courses that may be available through the Bates Technical College courses, professional development committees, etc. 
  • Participate actively and collaboratively on committees for college as needed including but not limited to staff recruitment, college councils, etc.
  • Additional activities, duties and responsibilities may be added with or without notice to meet college needs.

Supervisory Responsibilities 
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Emergency Management, Public Safety, Criminal Justice, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Professional experience in public safety, emergency response, law enforcement, social services, or related fields.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, policies, and best practices in emergency management, risk mitigation, and community engagement.

Allowable Substitution

If necessary, alternative combinations of education and experience may be evaluated by Human Resources for comparability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in training, teaching, or mentoring in public safety, emergency management, or related disciplines.
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary teams, including collaboration with law enforcement, emergency responders, social workers, or public health professionals.
  • Professional experience in emergency management, public safety technology, disaster response, social services, or community risk reduction.
  • Knowledge of public policy, regulatory compliance, and legal frameworks related to community services and public safety.
