What are the responsibilities and job description for the Phlebotomist position at Bath Community Hospital?
Under the general supervision of the Clinical Team Lead, the Phlebotomist performs laboratory procedures in phlebotomy and works to facilitate patient flow through Bath Community Physician Group office and ensures an accurate and complete medical record for each patient.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates ability to complete routine blood samples within 5 minutes and difficult cases within 15 minutes; requests help after two to three attempts.
- Responds to changes in work schedule and workload as necessary.
- Manages time effectively to benefit the department.
- Prioritizes work to achieve maximum efficiency.
- Performs specimen processing daily in a timely manner.
- Follows appropriate infection control guidelines and uses personal protective equipment.
- Adheres to patient and environmental safety protocols.
- Assesses situations, considers alternatives, and selects appropriate actions.
- Reports suggestions or recommendations for department policies and procedures to the supervisor.
- Demonstrates initiative in completing duties and tasks without reminders.
- Greets patients professionally, inspiring confidence through courteous and professional communication.
- Identifies patients properly before performing procedures (verifying name and date of birth).
- Performs proper handwashing techniques before each patient contact.
- Obtains blood samples using proper techniques.
- Performs venipuncture accurately and efficiently.
- Uses needle safety devices appropriately.
- Labels test tubes immediately after procedures, including name, ID number, date, time, and initials.
- Disposes of needles and supplies properly, complying with Universal Bloodborne Precautions.
- Collaborates with other departments and maintains positive working relationships.
- Keeps phlebotomy supplies stocked and work areas clean and organized.
- Communicates efficiently with physicians, visitors, patients, and staff.
- Seeks guidance and direction when necessary.
- Recognizes and completes tasks beyond assigned duties; regularly assists others.
- Understands special procedures, needles, anticoagulants, handling, and test preparation.
- Follows department and hospital policies.
- Performs additional tasks as needed based on hospital operations, including working outside scheduled shifts when necessary.
- Participates in required and elective educational activities to maintain skills.
- Attends department and hospital meetings as required.
- Complies with all Bath Community Hospital policies and procedures, including professional licensure requirements.

Regulatory Requirements:
- BLS certification (required).
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).

- Moderate knowledge of medical technology (required).

- Basic computer knowledge.
- Understanding of HIPAA regulations.
