Civil/Structural Engineer

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Civil / Structural Engineer to work in our Engineering Structural and Seismic Analysis department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Research and Education Campus with every other Friday off.

You will apply engineering principles to analysis, modeling, and simulation of structural and mechanical systems and components. . You will report to the manager of the Engineering Structural and Seismic Analysis department.

Responsibilities Include :

• Provide support in development of engineering design requirements, equipment selection and sizing, vendor equipment summaries and evaluations, specifications, drawings, and engineering analysis and calculations.
• Perform mechanical / civil structural evaluations and analyses of the behavior of structures, systems and components under normal operating conditions, natural phenomena hazards, and postulated accident conditions to support continued safe operation of INL nuclear facilities.
• Perform calculations and develop analytical and computational models to investigate nonlinear behavior of nuclear and radiological facilities to seismic ground motion and help identify potential research topics in the field of structural dynamics.
• Participate on technical teams to respond to NEUP, LDRD, and other DOE funding opportunities, create proposals, and secure funding for conducting research.
• Plan and implement research in structural dynamics, seismic-induced non-linear soil structure interaction analysis, site response analysis, and development of advanced seismic probabilistic risk assessment (SPRAs) methods. Analyses may involve applying thermal, mechanical, and seismic and other hazard loads to evaluate material and system response in various environments. Support experimental test design and perform activities such as material properties testing and drop testing.
• Document engineering analyses in accordance with Company requirements. Some assignments may require experimental physical testing involving test planning, instrumentation, performance, and data acquisition and assessment.
• Create technical reports, peer reviewed publications, proposals, and intellectual property in the seismic and structural dynamics domain within INL, and interface with sponsors and peers through programmatic and technical presentations.
• Be a technical resource and liaison to other INL organizations (e.g., NS&T, EES&T, ATR, and MFC) and provide support for external collaborations.
• Work both in isolation and as a member of a team. Provide input in a constructive manner to others while maintaining a positive and professional relationship with all.
• Become familiar with ASME, ASCE, ACI, IBC, and other mechanical and structural codes and their relationship to DOE requirements for various safety class structures, systems, and components.
• Help with business planning and development efforts. Be an advisor to management in area of technical expertise. May be spokesperson to customer in area of expertise.
• Supply leadership, mentor junior staff, peer review, checking, and consultation to fellow scientists, engineers and others. Be a primary author on professional technical reports and presentations. Advise on capability enhancement for lab-wide structural engineering service.
• May review work and articles developed by professionals outside the Laboratory. May serve on national professional technical committees. Author literary publications, present papers at national meetings, and develop intellectual property when applicable. Suggest capability enhancement and business strategy directions to manager.
• Other responsibilities as assigned.
• Minimum Requirements :
• Level 2 : Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or related Engineering field and 2 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree in the same Engineering fields.
• Level 3 : Bachelor’s degree inCivil, Structural, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or related Engineering fieldand 5 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree inin the same Engineering fieldsand 2 years of relevant experience.
• This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
• Job Information :
• The pay range for this position is : Level 2 ($77,628 - $159,228) / Level 3 ($93,204 - $191,076). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
• TDP : This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
• Multi-Level : This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
