Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Nuclear Graphite Technical Staff to work in our Irradiated Fuels and Materials department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Research Education Campus with every other Friday off.
The Irradiated Fuels and Materials department at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) seeks to fill a staff research position in nuclear graphite. The Nuclear Materials Design staff will join the on-going and future efforts in the Nuclear Materials Department with a focus on supporting the DOE Advanced Reactor Development (ART) graphite program. The ART graphite program is a mature DOE funded program conducting one of the largest nuclear graphite unirradiated and irradiated testing programs in the world. This is an experimental position within the DOE Advanced Reactor Development (ART) graphite program and will primarily consist of characterization and testing synthetic graphite grades for new high temperature reactor (HTR) core components.
- Responsibilities Include :
- Assist with investigation of graphite irradiation damage mechanisms
- Lead characterization studies on irradiated graphite, develop new material testing methods, lead PIE activities, and lead academic, national, and international collaborations in nuclear graphite research.
- Experience in characterization and testing of C-C and SiC-SiC CMCs, fuel matrix material, and MMCs within a High Temperature Reactor (HTR) design would be advantageous.
- Knowledge and experience in nuclear graphite (not graphene) core component issues.
Minimum Requirements :
Level 2 : Masters or PhD in Material Science or related field with an emphasis in structural graphite characterizationLevel 3 : Masters or PhD in Material Science or related field with an emphasis in structural graphite characterization and at least 2 years of relevant experienceProven knowledge and expertise in the characterization of irradiated graphite material utilizing TEM & FIB is requiredExperience in testing of irradiated graphite materials is requiredExperience analyzing and modeling experimental results is requiredExperience in characterization techniques utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), digital image correlation (DIC), micro X-ray computer tomography (XCT), and / or other pertinent characterization techniques are desirableExperience in conducting high temperature TEM characterization to assess annealing of irradiated graphite would be advantageousPrior publications in high impact journals with respect to materials science, characterization and nuclear applicationsStrong asset to our interdisciplinary R&D team and work both independently and as a team memberWork collaboratively with peers and multi-disciplinary teamsJob Information :The pay range for this position is : Level 2 ($75,804.00 - $155,496.00) / Level 3 ($91,008.00 - $186,588.00).
