Job Summary

We are currently seeking an Associate Biological Safety Officer . This position located in West Jefferson, OH .

The Associate Biological Safety Officer is accountable to the Safety Health and Emergency Response Program Manager, supports the Sr. Biosafety Officer, and is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of Battelle research staff in a professional, ethical manner and to be accountable for the elimination or reduction of known hazards in accordance with the Customer Service Model (i.e., timeliness of service delivered; partner-oriented, problem-solving attitude; quality of service delivered; professionalism and integrity; and cost efficiency). Develops, recommends and implements programs, policies and procedures for effective control of biological safety and health hazards. Monitors the effectiveness of Battelle's safety programs and provides consulting services and technical leadership to all organizational levels in the area of biological safety and health. Services will be provided to Battelle research operations that involve support to a wide variety of research projects involving biomedical / biodefense countermeasures development and implementation. Ensures Environment, Safety and Health systems minimize risk for all and fully support the Battelle commitment to an accident-free, injury-free, and occupational illness-free culture.

Responsibilities

• Takes personal responsibility for the safety and health of all Battelle staff, contractors, visitors, and guests. Stops work or other activities that pose a real or potential threat to safety, environmental protection, or regulatory compliance whenever and wherever such threats are observed.
• Assists with managing and maintaining institutional committees that pertain to biosafety. Coordinate and maintain records for such committees and maintain correspondence with external government oversight organizations as applicable.
• Collaborate with Senior Biological Safety Officer and research staff to ensure safe research practices and compliance with government research guidelines (e.g. Federal Select Agent Program, NIH Guidelines for Recombinant Research, Dual Use Research of Concern Policy, etc).
• Conduct trainings in safe research practices for biological research laboratories including BSL / ABSL-2 and BSL / ABSL-3 enhanced bio-facilities.
• Conducts risk analyses of hazardous operations and activities in the supported operational organizations and identifies appropriate mitigation of the risks identified.
• Provides biological safety consultation prior to facility modifications as it pertains to maintaining biological containment for research conducted within BSL / ABSL-2, BSL / ABSL-3 enhanced facilities.
• Responds to requests for assistance or responds to emergencies that could affect the health or safety of staff members. Assists management with conducting accident / incident investigations and works with management to identify corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
• Prepares technical reports based on expert interpretation of measurements, observations, technical publications and regulations to communicate effective improvements to current research safety standards.
• Exercises professional judgment in identifying safety and health problems, selecting appropriate solutions under differing situations, determining priorities and ensuring procedures to accomplish desired end results.
• Assesses and analyzes the potential safety and health risks of Battelle research projects that involve hazardous materials and determines effective controls to mitigate those risks.
• Provides expert review of research proposals to identify potential hazards or requirements that may directly affect either the conduct of work or have an impact on Battelle activities or projects.
• Conducts facilities audits to ensure that safety and health programs are being carried out in an effective manner and to identify deficiencies and unsafe work practices or conditions.
