Job Summary
Battelle’s Integrated Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives (CBRNE) Defense Business Line is currently seeking candidates for a full time, permanent position to develop, evaluate, and implement materials, devices, and techniques to evaluate detection canines versus various hazards. This position is located in Columbus, Ohio. Significant domestic travel is anticipated. This is an in person position.
Battelle is seeking a motivated individual to support the design, planning, and execution of field studies and related laboratory efforts focused on understanding and advancing detection canine teams. This position will involve working hands-on with a dynamic group of engineers, scientists, geneticists, and canine trainers/handlers to evaluate team performance, identify and develop novel tools/solutions, and conduct fundamental research. Candidates will also initiate/lead data mining and analysis, report development, presentation preparation, literature reviews, and client meetings. Candidates must have previous experience working with detection canines, explosives, field test environments, and method development.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the design, execution, and reporting on various projects involving the testing of detection canines.
- Assist with the troubleshooting of technical difficulties involving detection canine testing, including the consistent generation of target odors while avoiding contamination and unintended cues.
- Participate in week-long field tests in various U.S. locations. Routine domestic travel of between one to two weeks per month is anticipated.
- Assist with the identification and execution of innovative testing and/or analysis methods to improve accuracy/efficiency of field tests.
- Assist/perform the compilation and presentation of data.

Assist/initiate documentation of study findings and results.
Key Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- >2 years of experience performing detection canine evaluations
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Data management experience and Excel knowledge.
- Proven ability to work in a team environment.
- Ability to consistently follow test protocols in a wide variety of field test environments, under continuous scrutiny from a variety of observers.
- Sole US citizenship, with the ability to obtain and maintain required government security clearances as a condition of employment.

Sufficient medical fitness to work in the laboratory and in the field to perform assigned duties.

- Previous experience with explosives/energetic materials.
