Job Summary
Battelle is currently seeking a Junior to Mid-Level Technical Editor to provide expert technical writing and editing for chemical threat assessments, modeling assessments, bulletins and fact sheets. This role supports the broad chemical defense analysis and modeling support, anchored by science editing support. This position is located on site with our DHS Chemical Security Analysis Center (CSAC) client in Edgewood, MD, and is for immediate fill.
Prospective candidates will work onsite at DHS CSAC in Edgewood, MD. This position is full time onsite but it eligible for part time telework as mission requirements dictate. This is an excellent opportunity for an early to mid-career professional to gain experience editing diverse subjects in chemical defense for the nation’s principal research and development resource for nonmedical chem-bio defense.

Responsibilities
- Preparing, reviewing, and editing articles, technical reports, manuscripts, annual reports, and special studies;
- Tracking product editing status and approvals using CSAC’s Sharepoint Dashboard system;
- Maintaining familiarity with relevant DHS regulations and editing accordingly;
- Providing QA support to other CSAC technical writer/editors and receiving QA feedback on your own editing work;
- Interfacing and collaborating with scientists regarding technical editing of their products;
- Liaising with DHS S&T security and communications regarding vetting to ensure documents meet DHS standards;
- Sharing best practices for scientific communication with CSAC personnel.
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communication or in a technical field; two years of experience as a writer/editor of technical publications; or an equivalent combination of education and or experience in a related field.
- Must have excellent grammatical and rhetorical skills and be familiar with a broad range of communication techniques and styles. Requires knowledge and understanding of the documentation cycle, including knowledge of layout and graphic design.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university;
- Background in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM);
- 3 - 5 years’ experience editing or writing STEM-based original research materials such as reports, journal articles, etc.;
- Proficiency discussing STEM-based subjects with scientists, engineers, and decision-makers;
- Proficiency in the application of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and Associated Press (AP) style guides;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Teams, Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet Explorer, and Adobe Acrobat; and
- Proficiency with EndNote
- U.S. Citizen with a current DOD SECRET clearance.
