What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Technician position at Battery Park Authority?
The Maintenance Technician is responsible for providing daily hands-on physical labor required to keep all Battery Park City Authority (BPCA) land sites and structures clean, safe and operable.
Essential Duties:
- Perform janitorial duties for park sites and structures by mobilizing the skill, physical capability, tools, and supplies needed to perform the following tasks:
- Collect and dispose of all debris as a result of daily park usage, special events, or specific work
- Manual and mechanical sweeping and washing of hard surfaces
- Graffiti and sticker removal
- Clean and replace supplies in public restrooms
- Clean and rake sand areas in playgrounds
- Sweep, mop, strip, wax, dust, vacuum, clean, and perform other related janitorial services
- Cleaning operations at all BPCP sites, such as the Tribeca Bridge and Rector Bridge
- Snow and ice removal, including the use of snow shovels, ice breakers, snow blowers, and salt spreaders on an emergency and non-emergency basis
- Unload maintenance deliveries
- Use protective equipment such as face masks, protective gloves, hard hats and goggles to maintain compliance with OSHA safety requirement
- Able to safely and effectively operate the following types of tools and equipment without posing risks to oneself, coworkers, and/or the public:
- Vehicles such as electric trucks and bicycles
- Cleaning equipment such as pressure washers
- Gasoline powered equipment such as leaf blowers
- Hand tools including shovels, brooms, dust pans, weeding knives, etc.
- Able to interact with the public as well as staff at Battery Park City Authority (BPCA) in a polite and friendly manner
- Assist trades when needed in performing maintenance tasks such as but not limited to:
- Painting and paint removal through manual and/or mechanical means
- Masonry repairs such as cobblestone, hex pavers, caulking, concrete patching, minor stonework repair, and general weatherproofing
- Perform periodic kitchen and lunchroom cleanup on a rotational basis
- Perform other duties as assigned
Education and Experience:
- A High School Diploma or GED is required. Previous maintenance and/or construction experience is required.
- A valid US Driver’s License is required.
Skills:
- Must be able to work independently and exhibit good judgment
- Excellent written and oral skills
- Must be able to interact with all levels of staff and the public in a courteous manner
Physical Requirements:
- Must be willing and able to perform physical labor outdoors in all types of weather.
- Must be able to push, pull and lift 50 lbs.
