Trainee Expectations

  • Make a time commitment of 20 hours per week for one full academic year and are assigned to an elementary, middle, or high school
  • Carry a caseload of 8 -10 students for individual counseling
  • Facilitate a minimum of one group per semester. Occasionally, trainees provide more group counseling hours, depending on school site needs and trainee/supervisor decisions.
  • Provide family support, consultation, and therapeutic intervention when appropriate.
  • Work cooperatively with school personnel.
  • Accompany staff counselors and provide classroom education on topics, such as substance abuse prevention and positive school interaction, when needed
  • Keep accurate, timely, clinical records (including documentation, assessments, and treatment plans).

Orientation: The didactic training begins with an intensive week-long orientation that provides information about the agency, an introduction to the traineeship, and an overview of the program structure and model. Orientation offers initial training on risk & crisis, working in schools, legal & ethical issues, psychosocial assessments, clinical interviewing, substance abuse, treatment planning, record keeping, and cultural diversity. Orientation is structured to provide trainees with enough initial information to begin work in the schools and feel supported in their training.

Individual Supervision: Individual supervision will focus on the development of sound clinical judgment and of the intern's expertise in assessment, treatment planning, psychotherapy and crisis interventions. The emphasis is also on how to provide skillful clinical services in a school setting, as well as how to develop thoughtful case conceptualization. All supervisors are licensed clinicians and have extensive experience working within the field of school based counseling. Writing progress notes and audio taping are a regular part of supervision.

Group supervision: Group supervision will focus on building clinical skills, while focusing on specific cases in a small group format. Trainees will learn to do formal case presentations and will gain support around working with students, their families and the schools. Audiotapes and/or transcriptions of specific sessions are required for case presentations.
