What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Assistant and Data Collector position at Bay Area Discovery Museum?
POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Head of Research and Evaluation, the Research Assistant / Data Collector will work onsite recruiting museum visitors to complete visitor experience surveys.
The pay rate for this non-exempt role is $21/ hour.
KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Visitor Data Collection
- Recruits visitors to complete a visitor experience survey on a tablet computer at the museum (note these are collected on variable weekend days per month)
- Demonstrates and models a high level of professional conduct and communication with all visitors and staff.
- Answers basic visitor questions and provides customer service as needed.
- Provides guidance for children and families including using developmentally appropriate language with children.
- Provides feedback to the Head of Research and Evaluation about the data collection process and impressions of visitor experiences based on observations and conversations with visitors.
Additional duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience or interest in working with young children, aged 0-10 years, and their families.
- Strong interpersonal skills. Must be positive, friendly, and curious.
- Excellent customer service skills.

- Must be comfortable working outdoors in all types of weather.
- Ability to perform physical activities such as bending, kneeling, walking, and picking up items. Ability to stand and walk for up to 3 hours at a time.
- Bilingual communication (speak, read, write) in English-Spanish or English-Cantonese preferred (eligible for increased compensation).
- Able to work with a collaborative team from various backgrounds and cultures.
- Ability to use required computer software or willingness and ability to learn and use new systems and technology.
- Abides by and enforces the museum’s health and safety protocols.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The employee is required to come and go from the work area; to talk and listen; and to read and understand documents containing text and/or numbers. The employee is required to use a tablet computer. Required vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must have the ability to work outdoors in inclement weather. The employee is frequently required to move from one location to another The employee may frequently be required to reach and stoop, kneel, or crouch.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Works in a combination of indoor and outdoor environments, including occasional high noise levels, widely varying temperatures, varying levels of light, and inclement weather. Will be required to perform work duties in full view of the public, while adhering to the Museum’s customer service standards.
