JOB TITLE: Teaching Artist, Brass

REPORTS TO: Site Manager, Operations Director 

STATUS: Part-time (non-exempt), 6-10  hours per week, seasonal (August - June)

SCHEDULE: Flexible schedule three days per week (Program hours*: Mon., Tue., Thu. & Fri. 3:15 – 6:00 pm; Wed. 1:00 - 5:00 pm plus a one-hour team meeting monthly) *Hours are subject to change based on program need and school schedule (Orchestra Wednesdays from 1:50 - 2:50). Occasional weekend days.

COMPENSATION: $42 - $45/hr (to start), depending on experience. 


ABOUT BAY AREA MUSIC PROJECT

Bay Area Music Project (BAMP) is an El Sistema-inspired in-and after-school music education program supporting the social-emotional and academic needs of children in low to moderate-income communities by providing high-quality music instruction, nutritious snacks and homework assistance regardless of abilities and circumstances. Our staff embraces both the social and musical mission of our program — they nurture both the individual person and the musician.


ABOUT THE POSITION 

As the Brass teaching artist, you are responsible for providing beginning and intermediate instrumental instruction to students aged 8 -11 in small group classes and sectionals. You will work as a team with other teaching artists to create a joyful and holistic environment for musical learning in after-school instrumental music programs at public schools in the East Bay (Alameda, Oakland) area. This role is a part-time, hourly, instructional seasonal employee position.


RESPONSIBILITIES 

Class Instruction 

  • Create a consistent and safe environment with clear procedures and expectations 
  • Encourage learning and performance activities that build self-confidence and leadership 
  • Engage students through the development and implementation of creative lesson plans that foster social and musical growth
  • Center inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility in teaching practice 
  • Maintain clear and specific goals for student learning (daily, weekly, semester, etc.) 

Musical Artistry 

  • Provide artistic support and guidance in the classroom at partner schools 
  • Attend and play alongside students in rehearsals and performances, and provide helpful feedback regarding technique, musicianship, and ensemble skills 
  • Inspire students by modeling musical curiosity through authentic and celebratory exploration of musical craft, both solo and in collaboration with others 

Teamwork & Relationships 

  • Develop collaborative and constructive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues 
  • Contribute to a vibrant, welcoming, and supportive team culture 
  • When appropriate, offer honest and constructive feedback to colleagues and supervisor
  • Participate in ongoing professional growth and development activities 

Administrative Duties 

  • Actively participate in appropriate administrative duties related to the role, including but not limited to meeting participation, payroll reporting, staff development activities, and communication
  • Record and communicate student attendance and learning progress as appropriate


QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor’s degree in music or 2-3 years of related work experience
  • Experience working with groups of children, youth orchestras, or in the El Sistema music education model
  • Experience and desire to work with children from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds
  • Strong organization skills, matched by a sense of humor and readiness to adapt 
  • Must consent to and pass live scan background check and fingerprinting and provide negative TB test result


WORKPLACE DEMANDS 

  • Work Hours - Part-time, hourly with some responsibilities on weekends and/or evenings depending on the program concert calendar 
  • Location - Exposed to changing conditions in indoor, outdoor, and virtual settings--including in school campuses, classrooms, libraries, offices, venues, parks, and other community spaces
  • Cleanliness & Odors - Clean to moderately clean; Occasionally working with children with varying access to hygiene support 
  • Social - Communicates with youth and adults in one-on-one, small groups, and large groups. 
  • Structure & Predictability - Low to Moderate
  • Physical - Can remain in a stationary position; Can move through crowded and uncrowded spaces with or without assistance; Can use, inspect, and adjust musical instruments; Can communicate and exchange information and ideas; Can discern and assess student musical learning; Can lift and/or transport up to 25 lbs. with or without assistance; Can reliably report for work on time at job sites 
  • Light - Lighting is typically fluorescent or natural
  • Noise - Noise levels range from quiet to loud
