Job Summary
2025 is off and running! Bay Area Pet Adoptions is adding a new position to assist with our growing medical services. We are searching for an experienced veterinary technician or vet tech assistant to join our team and work alongside our Veterinary Services Manager.
Verifiable Veterinary Technician or Vet Tech Assistant experience is required for this position . 1 year minimum.
The ideal team member will be confident, have strong animal handling skills, attention to detail and good communication skills, in addtion to a strong passion for animal care and welfare, with the ability to assist in providing high-quality medical care. This role requires a blend of technical skills, knowledge of animal anatomy, and the ability to perform laboratory procedures while ensuring the comfort and safety of our patients.
Required Skills:
- Excellent client communication skills via phone and/or in-person to discuss and explain vaccine schedules and protocols, heartworm treatment and /or treatment plan; go over release forms and post-op instructions with clients
- Must have good written and verbal communication skills
- Must be computer literate across different platforms. (Including word, excel, google docs) and have the ability to learn new software easily and quickly
- Must be organized with the ability to maintain/document medical notes and follow documented treatment plans as written
- Excellent scientific aptitude with a good understanding of animal anatomy and physiology
- Must have the confidence and physical strength to hold/restrain cats and all sizes, breeds and temperaments of dogs while performing animal restraint techniques to ensure safety for both staff and animals.
- Good observation skills with the ability to notice subtle clues in animal behavior and body language
- Clean/sterilize instruments
- Ability to be creative as instruments, tools and procedures may need to be modified to fit a particular animal or species
- Prep animals and assist in surgery
- Perform and read lab tests (fecal, ear cytology, skin scrapings…)
- IV Catheter placement
- Perform blood draws without assistance
- Bandage/wound care, hydrotherapy
- Must have the ability to multi-task and prioritize assigned tasks
- Assist during examinations and surgical procedures
- Monitor vital signs and overall health of animals during procedures
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the clinic or hospital environment
- A genuine love for animals and commitment to their well-being
Requirements:
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- Must have reliable, daily transportation.
- Must be reliable and show up to work, ready to work. Tardiness is not acceptable.
- Must be available to work holidays and weekends.
- Ability to perform moderately heavy physical labor.
- Possess strong communication skills. You must have the ability to communicate with staff members, leadership, volunteers and the public.
- Ability to be productive, efficient, and respectful during high stress periods.
- Willingness to learn and ability to retain information taught.
- Apply knowledge and skills in controlling/handling individual animal temperament.
- Ability to gain animal confidence when restraining them for transport, grooming and/or treatment.
- You must treat all animals with respect and kindness.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments. Understand and carry out oral and written direction.

- Frequently required to bend, stand, stoop, walk, sit, communicate, and listen, frequently working in a bent position.
- Frequently use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel; will reach with hands and arms.
- Frequently on your feet for most of the day.
- Use strength or agility in capturing and restraining stronger, more active animals.
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Occasionally handle dogs weighing up to and over 150 lbs. Assistance will be provided by animal handlers when working with larger animals.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to hazards associated with dogs and cats of all sizes, breeds and temperaments; exposure to unpleasant odors and loud noises; exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes; and possible exposure to contagious diseases.
You must be comfortable working with all sizes, breeds and temperaments of animals.

Pay: $14.50 - $17.50 per hour
