NATURE OF JOB:
This position is responsible for the overall operation, quality, efficiency and effectiveness of DES response vehicles, the fiscal management of the fleet division as well as the proper planning of the replacement program and repairs to the fleet. This position is responsible for repairing, servicing and maintaining the DES response vehicles in accordance with standard trade practices.
- Prioritizes and schedules repairs; troubleshoots and inspects to determine nature and extent of repair; performs quality control inspections to ensure that all repairs meet manufacturer specifications; responds to emergency road calls for disabled DES vehicles and equipment, if necessary.
- Performs the specific diagnostic check, maintenance or repair task, or performance tests specified in National Fire Protection Association Standard (NFPA) 1911, Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Testing, and Retirement of In-Service Automotive Fire Apparatus, current edition.
- Schedules, assigns and supervises the work of the DES Fleet Facility labor forces to effect satisfactory schedules and results in a manner conductive to full performance and high morale.
- Performs skilled automotive mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and auxiliary equipment.
- Repairs and overhauls mechanical components on DES equipment.
- Inspects, tests, adjusts, repairs, rebuilds or replaces complete or integral parts of diesel and gasoline engines, components, transmissions, etc.
- Diagnoses malfunctions and adjusts engine, fuel, electrical, and mechanical system to specifications including electronic fuel injection systems and electronically controlled transmissions.
- Understands and follows technical manuals, lube orders, wiring and hydraulic schematics utilized during scheduled service intervals to ensure proper diagnosis and repair of vehicles and equipment.
- Performs major repair jobs by disassembling and cleaning parts, removing components, removal and installation of assemblies and installation of components.
- Reports any facility maintenance issues, and ensures the request is completed.
- The employer may add to or change duties at any time and as determined by the County and its leaders to best ensure that the public is served through the work of the Department.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Possess a high school diploma or the equivalent: AND
- Six (6) years of experience in fleet management or a closely related field, which includes supervisory responsibilities.
- A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS:
- Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Florida driver license upon offer of employment with a driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program.
- Possession of and maintain the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification Commission, Inc. (EVT) for Fire Apparatus Technician Level III Master certification.
- Possession of and maintain the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence’s (ASE) Medium/Heavy Truck Level III Master (T1 through T8) certifications, as demonstrated by current ASE certification or EVT (Fire Apparatus) certification.
- Knowledge of all phases of both diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment to perform the tasks as assigned in an effective and expedient manner.
- Knowledge of automotive and heavy equipment specifications, maintenance standards and disposal practices.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the automotive repair trade.
- Skill in the proper use and care of tools, equipment, and materials of the mechanical trade.
- Skill in repairing defects in a wide variety of automotive equipment.
- Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Knowledge of project management and organizational skills.
- Ability to perform supervisory and leadership of the personnel within the department.
- Ability to have excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work and maintain reliable full-time attendance.
- Ability to comprehend, speak, and read the English language.
- Ability to have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Work is primarily performed outdoors in varying and adverse weather; work in water, brush and ditches. Work requires moderate exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, inclement weather, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, odors or dust).
This position requires some exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, etc.). This position may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations.
Stooping, sitting, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pulling, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception. Ability to frequently lift and carry equipment 25-50lbs. and on occasion up to 100 pounds; manual dexterity and mobility; intermittent exertion when performing duties.
WORK LOCATION:
Not Eligible for Remote Work - This position is assigned to a county worksite. Due to the non-portable nature of the essential functions of this position, this position is not eligible for telework.
Salary : $68,973 - $120,349
