NATURE OF JOB:
This is skilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair of County properties. This position performs a variety of manual labor tasks requiring job-acquired skills in a specialized field. Work differs from the Maintenance Worker class in that the employee is expected to work tasks requiring advanced skills. Duties are routine but are performed with a degree of independence. Work is performed under the direction of the Roads & Bridges Supervisor and is reviewed through observation of program effectiveness.
- Participates in the maintenance and repair of the Bay County Road System.
- Assist supervisor in the planning and lay-out of projects.
- Assists in cleaning ditches and controlling the growth of weeds in drainage areas.
- Works in trenches or excavations often with water in excavation.
- Responsible for pipe-laying, bridge repairs, asphalt and cement duties.
- May on occasion, oversee the duties of pipe laying, bridge repairs, and asphalt and cement duties.
- Operates light construction equipment; sets up and operates pumps, compressors and generators.
- Makes inspections and keeps basic records, including assisting in level work and setting grades.
- Required to be able to operate various automotive vehicles, trucks, or tractors.
- Regular reliable full time attendance as scheduled.
- The employer may add to or change duties at any time and as determined by the County and its leaders to best ensure that the public is served through the work of the Department.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
- Two (2) years’ experience in construction, maintenance and repair work.
- Must be able to comprehend, speak and read the English language.
- Must have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public.
- A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Florida driver license upon offer of employment with a driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program.
- Knowledge of tools, methods, and materials in general maintenance work.
- Knowledge of methods and tools used in cement finishing’s and block laying.
- Must have good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with public.
- Outstanding project management and organizational skills.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and ability to supervise a small crew.
- Ability to recognize safety hazards in the work involved and takes precautionary methods to protect self and others.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Work is primarily performed outdoors and requires moderate to extreme exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, varying and adverse weather; work in water, brush and ditches, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, odors or dust).
This position requires moderate exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g. exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment) This position often requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations or clearances.
Bending/stooping, sitting, standing, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing/pulling, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement of firm grasping and fine manipulation, repetitive motions, depth perception, balancing, squatting, working at heights. This position requires frequent lifting and carrying of 10-25 lbs, and up to 100 lbs. on occasion.
