NATURE OF JOB:
This is skilled technical work primarily focusing on the operation and maintenance of the Bay County Water Treatment Plant sludge dewatering centrifuges, associated sludge feed pumps polymer systems, and process equipment. The position also performs the same maintenance at the county’s other water treatment and distribution sites, this includes upkeep, service, calibration, repair and installation of various mechanical aspects of a multitude of industrial systems within the Water and Wastewater facilities. This position will report to the Project Manager and Maintenance Coordinator.
- Operates and optimizes the sludge dewatering centrifuges and associated polymer feed system to remove excess water from digested sludge in the most cost-effective manner possible.
- Performs routine maintenance, lubrication and cleanup of sludge centrifuge and polymer feed system.
- Ability to learn troubleshooting techniques and repairs, maintains and/or calibrates mechanical, electrical, electronic and ancillary equipment associated with the County’s Water and Storage/Distribution Sites: inclusive of items such as pumps, valves, motors, air compressors, sensors and telemetry equipment, ultraviolet light disinfection equipment, solids centrifuge equipment, flow meters, generators and related equipment.
- Performs comprehensive preventative maintenance on all equipment including but not limited to pumps, valves, compressors, gates, and other on-site equipment and machinery.
- Maintains complete and accurate records of all maintenance and repairs, and reports it to the Project Manager / Maintenance Coordinator and the Lead Water Mechanic.
- Assists in fabrication and/or installs minor equipment and piping modifications and additions.
- Assists in performing equipment vibration analysis and thermal imaging to develop predictive maintenance needs and schedule.
- Ability to learn how to operate dump trucks, semi-trucks & trailers, backhoes, loaders, tractors, skid steers, and other various equipment.
- Becomes familiar with the operational and maintenance aspects of all Utility sites, pump stations, plants, and properties.
- Ability to learn how to utilize the Computer Maintenance Management System to effectively control resources and manage assets.
- Regular reliable full-time attendance as scheduled.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience in the repair and maintenance of the types of equipment found in either industrial plants, refineries, chemical plants, commercial shipyards, water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, and collection systems.
- Must be able to comprehend, speak and read the English language.
- Must have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public.
- A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
- May be required to possess, or obtain, a Class “A” Florida Commercial Driver’s License.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Florida driver license upon offer of employment with a driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program.
- Knowledge of repair and maintenance procedures for the types of equipment found in Water Treatment Plants, Storage Facilities, and Pumping Stations.
- Knowledge of and experience using a wide assortment of hand and power tools and other repair or maintenance equipment, including safety equipment.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and precautions required when performing maintenance tasks on equipment typically found in the wastewater plant.
- Must have good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with public.
- Outstanding project management and organizational skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to read and comprehend complex technical information and mechanical drawings concerning equipment construction, repair and maintenance procedures.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, subordinates and supervisors.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Work is primarily performed outdoors and requires exposure to environmental changes (e.g., outdoor weather and/or field conditions, warehouses, garages, etc.) or irate customers, extreme noise, odors, heights and/or dust.
This position requires some exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, etc.). This position may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations or clearances.
This position requires stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, visual acuity (i.e. seeing up close, seeing far away, depth perception), kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement, repetitive motions. This position may require frequent lifting and carrying of 25-50lbs, and occasionally up to 100lbs.
