Director of Finance and Operations
Bay Farm Montessori Academy seeks an experienced, growth oriented Director of Finance & Operations to join the administrative team. The Finance manager will serve as a critical partner to the leadership team and the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees, and reports directly to the Head of School.
The ideal candidate for this position is versed in fundamentals of accounting and finance and
has a balanced approach to strategic and operational strategies. The DFO is able to balance
long-term strategic goals and is also aware of a need to be engaged with the day-to-day
operations and be available for support of a variety of programs and initiatives.
Essential Job Functions
1. Financial Management: Manage all aspects of financial operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger functions. Ensure compliance with accounting principles, regulations, and internal financial policies. Monitor cash flow, investments, and financial performance to align with budgetary goals.
2. Payroll & Benefits Administration: Manage and process bi-monthly payroll. Maintain and administer a competitive benefit and compensation package according to the policies established by the Board and in collaboration with the Head of School. Remain abreast of personnel controls mandated by the state of Massachusetts and the federal government such as: EEOC regulations, OSHA regulations, Employment Retirement Income Security Act and wage and hour laws.
3. Risk Management: Maintain Worker’s Compensation and unemployment insurance package in compliance with state regulations. Maintain appropriate liability coverage for the Board, administration, employees, students and volunteers who work on behalf of the school. Maintain appropriate property & casualty insurance coverage based on current evaluations of the plant, equipment, vehicles and other property.
4. Campus Facilities Management: Provide support and oversight to the Director of Facilities who coordinates maintenance, landscaping, and facilities upkeep/cleaning. Oversee campus operations including safety and security. Provide oversight to the animal care contractor.
Education, Training and/or Experience
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or a related field and a minimum of five years professional experience in finance/operations. Experience with independent school administration is preferred. Experience with non-profit accounting desired.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- An understanding of the principles of accounting, general ledger, adjusting journal
- entries, internal controls, and financial best practices.
- Ability to create, update, and review financial statements. Prior experience in a non-profit environment is a plus.
- Experience navigating complex customer service matters, providing customer support, and ensuring customer satisfaction with both routine and sensitive matters.
- Experience supporting and engaging with a non-profit Board of Directors.Thorough understanding of human resources regulatory frameworks, payroll regulations, and other compliance requirements.
- Experience supervising and working inter-departmentally with diverse stakeholders
- Broad understanding of business, information technology, facilities/management, and general operations of non-profit organizations.
- Exemplary customer service skills, strong oral & written communications.
- Understands and demonstrates confidentiality regarding parent and family situations,able to work with a high degree of autonomy.
Certifications, Licenses, or Registrations: CPR, First Aid (or provided by the School)
