The asphalt plate roller operator must be able to operate equipment used for applying concrete, asphalt, or other materials to roadbeds, highways, or runways.
Essential Functions
- Distribute, break down, compress, and give a finished surface to cooling asphalt
- Drives machine in successive overlapping passes over surfaces to be compacted, rolling subgrade and asphalt to desired compaction and smoothness
- Assist in the placement, moving and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones, and other traffic control devices
- Observe distribution of paving material to adjust machine settings or material flow, and indicate low spots for workers to add material
- Control traffic flow
- Light burners or start heating units of machines and regulate screed temperatures and asphalt flow rates
- Inspect, clean, maintain and repair equipment
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools needed in construction of highways and roadways
- Perform daily maintenance and safety checks
- Ensure compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting the company’s safety culture
- Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned
- High School Diploma or GED required
- At least 3 years’ experience with asphalt, highway, paving, bridge, sewer, and road construction
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of highways, roads, sewers, and bridges
- Knowledge of asphalt paver/roller and other heavy equipment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Exercise discretion and independent judgement when handling day to day information
- Excellent time-management skills to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities
- Ability to work cooperatively across all levels delivering on commitments – results oriented
- Ability to complete work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to work under pressure to meet department targets and deadlines
- Ability to work non-routine hours, when necessary
- Ability and willingness to travel as required
- Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas
- Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
- Ability to operate job related tools
- Constantly perform repeating motions that may include feet, leg, wrists, hands and/or fingers
- Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help.
