POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Controller, the Senior Accountant is responsible for managing all grant accounting functions; in addition to overseeing the Grants Management Department. The Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing the financial management, compliance, and reporting of grants and funded programs. This role ensures that all grant-related financial activities align with organizational policies, funding agency requirements, and applicable laws and regulations. The Senior Accountant plays a critical role in maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial reports, and supporting audits related to grants. The ideal candidate will have at least five years of senior-level accounting experience, the ability to work independently, and a proven track record of meeting deadlines in a dynamic environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Oversee and manage the work within the Accounting and Grants Management Department related to this position.
- Manage all financial aspects of grant funding, including budgeting, reporting, and compliance of related financial transactions.
- Monitor grant expenditures to ensure alignment with grant budgets and funding requirements.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including OMB Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200) and other applicable standards.
- Establish and maintain a comprehensive tracking system for all active grants, including funding schedules, reporting deadlines, and closeout requirements.
- Reconcile grant accounts monthly to ensure accuracy and resolve discrepancies.
- Coordinate the grant closeout process, ensuring all financial and programmatic obligations are met.
- Prepare final financial reports and ensure all unused funds are returned or reallocated per grantor requirements.
- Prepare and submit accurate and timely financial reports to grantors, and collaborate with program managers to ensure grant activities meet funding agency requirements.
- Assist program managers in understanding grant-related financial data and compliance requirements.
- Maintain complete and accurate documentation of grant agreements, amendments, and correspondence.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports. Reconcile general ledger accounts related to grants.
- Collaborate with auditors during annual audits, ensuring accurate and timely responses to audit requests.
- Assist in developing and improving internal controls related to grants, and recommend or implement process improvements to enhance grant management efficiency.
- Provide projections and financial analyses to support decision-making.
- Provide regular updates and reports on departmental activities and outcomes.
- The Senior Accountant must work closely with the Assistant Controller and/or Controller to manage these various functions to ensure maximum productivity within the organization's budget limitations.
- Implement effective communication process in order to ensure on-going, positive up-and-down communications between these functions. Establishes and maintains a professional, trained, and motivated staff through effective implementation of performance and career-development programs.
- Reviews work of direct reports periodically for technical adequacy and conformance to rules, policies, procedures, and established goals. This will include annual evaluation of all staff under the scope of this position.
- Creates a friendly work atmosphere and communicates an “OPEN DOOR” policy to all employees to resolve employee disputes in a timely manner.
- Other duties may be assigned within the scope and complexity of this position’s essential functions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and stand. Occasionally the employee is required to walk, bend, lift, and/or move up to 25 pounds. The position requires working under both indoor and outdoor weather conditions.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business or another related field required; CPA or CMA certification preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years senior-level accounting experience, with demonstrated experience in grant accounting or non-profit accounting.
- Must have the ability to plan, coordinate, and direct staff engaged in various professional, technical, and administrative functions of the Grants Management Department.
- Excellent typing and computer skills; working knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications required.
- In-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and federal grant compliance (e.g., Uniform Guidance).
- Must possess a personable, customer service attitude along with organizational ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills; both oral and written.
- Must present a well-groomed, professional appearance.
- Must have an excellent past work history, as demonstrated through references and background checks.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Must have a flexible schedule and be able to travel when needed.
