The Bay of Pigs Museum and Library of the Brigade 2506 ("BOP Museum") was established in 1987 in the heart of Little Havana in Miami. It has served as a meeting place for the veterans of the Brigade 2506 since that time, and the veterans themselves volunteer to share their personal experiences with visitors to the museum.
The mission of the Bay of Pigs Museum is based on three pillars:
REMEMBER the men and their sacrifices
EDUCATE the public on the history of the Bay of Pigs and its consequences
INSPIRE and advocate for freedom and democracy in Cuba and throughout the world
The BOP Museum's vision is to be the world's premier institution exploring the impact of the Bay of Pigs Invasion in the US, Cuba and worldwide using a curated collection that details the historical event and highlights the men who participated in it, and programming that explores the parallels between the invasion and current day struggles for freedom.
Little Havana is the heart of the Cuban American community and is a main attraction for the more than 24 million yearly visitors to Greater Miami. The BOP Museum's location in this vibrant community of restaurants, art galleries and other entertainment options attracts both national and international tourists.
Candidate Profile
The BOP Museum is searching for a docent who has exemplary skills and a passion for our organization. The candidate will ensure that the daily museum tours are executed professionally and enthusiastically and prioritizes and facilitates a modernized visitor experience while keeping true to the mission of the museum.
Docents must have accurate historical knowledge of the Bay of Pigs Invasion once trained and have exemplary interpersonal skills to engage patrons.
Docent Responsibilities
Objective
To advance the educational mission of the Bay of Pigs Museum and Library of the 2506 Brigade by conducting tours and providing educational programs for the general public (children, adults, families).
Job Description
Docents conduct guided tours of the Museum for groups of students and adults. Utilizing the techniques of dialogue and inquiry, role play and storytelling, the docent encourages students to explore our historic exhibits. The programs may explore topics such as the Bay of Pigs Invasion of April 1961. Docents assist in the development of educational programs and conduct special activities for students, adults and families. Docents must be bilingual in English and Spanish languages to best serve our patrons and veterans.
Activities and Responsibilities
Docents complete an Introductory Training Course, study selected readings and accompany other docents on guided tours to gain knowledge and skills in leading groups. Docents conduct programs by greeting the groups and leading the tours and programs. The docent is involved in the evaluation of the groups and the programs.
Characteristics, Training, and Experience
Docents must be enthusiastic, cheerful, and willing to learn and should have an interest in working with people, including students, and be willing to become actively involved in the programs of the Museum. Experience or education in history, political science, art, or teaching can be helpful, although not required.
Education and Experience
- Knowledge of Cuban history is also beneficial to perform these duties.
- Proficient knowledge of office equipment and software systems such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Docs.
