This Opportunity
Bay West is seeking a Transportation and Disposal (T&D) Chemist to support our hazardous and non-hazardous waste operations. This role involves waste profiling, lab packing, manifest preparation, and assisting with industrial services and emergency response projects. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of waste regulations and hands-on experience in the field.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Perform waste profiling, manifest creation, lab packing and transportation services for hazardous and non-hazardous materials at customer sites.
- Create and prints manifests, labels, Land Disposal Restrictions, waste profiles, etc. for T&D projects using web-based Waste Management program.
- Accurately segregate and package hazardous and non-hazardous waste containers according to DOT and EPA regulations
- Perform waste sampling and waste characterization in the field.
- Track and store T&D related information in the electronic internal document management system
- Assist in the management of the 10-day hazardous waste storage trailer.
- Assists T&D Coordinator daily in developing and documenting transportation and disposal procedures.
- Assist with Industrial Services (IS) projects including tank cleanings and facility decontaminations/cleanings.
- When not traveling, be available for one week every six to nine weeks to be part of an on-call Emergency Response (ER) team to clean-up hazardous and non-hazardous material spills, loading, unloading, and decontaminating ER equipment in an efficient and accurate manner. On-call requires that staff stay within one hour of the Bay West office and be prepared to respond 24-7.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external customers in a courteous and professional manner.
- Provide open communication with Team Leader on ways to improve Bay West techniques, operations, and functions.
- Up to 25% out-of-town travel mainly in the Midwest region (ND, SD, IA, WI, MN)
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree in a science related field preferred
- Minimum 1-3 years of related field experience including waste transportation and packaging.
- Valid US driver’s license with acceptable driving record required; Class A or B CDL with Hazmat endorsement
- Comprehensive knowledge of DOT and RCRA Hazardous waste rules and regulations preferred
- Proficiency using Word and Excel applications
- Currently have or willing to obtain a 40 Hour HAZWOPER certification
- Reliable means of transportation on a 24-hour basis
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills both written and verbal
- Experience supporting multiple projects on deadline while providing excellent customer service
- Superb problem-solving skills, time-management, and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently
- Willingness to champion changes and improvements
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with field equipment such as box trucks, lift gates, forklifts, drum carts and pallet jacks.
- Knowledge of state and federal environmental regulations and laws, including, but not limited to, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) cleanup guidance and United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)
Physical Requirements
- Repetitive motions: frequent standing, walking, lifting, carrying, bending, and grasping Frequently lift 25 lbs. over an 8-hour period, and occasionally up to 50 lbs. for less than one hour
- Frequent exposure to non-hazardous and hazardous work environments including contaminated air, soil, dust, fumes, smoke and other toxins
- Ability to work outside in varying conditions, such as high heat, high humidity and extreme cold in remote locations.
- Ability to read and interpret general documents, safety rules, and Standard Operating Procedures
