The City of Berkeley Public Health Department in conjunction with BAYAC (Bay Area Youth Agency Consortium) AmeriCorps is seeking energetic Health Education Interns to provide individual/group education and facilitate a peer education program at the Berkeley High School Health Center for the 2016/2017 academic year. The Berkeley High School Health Center is a comprehensive adolescent clinic serving high school students in Berkeley, offering free and confidential medical, mental health, and health education services.
About BAYAC AmeriCorps
BAYAC AmeriCorps collaborates with over 20 agencies in over 70 schools and community-based organizations to serve youth and families in the San Francisco Bay Area. As part of AmeriCorps, BAYAC Members commit to a full-time (40 hours/week) year of service in the Bay Area's most high-need communities, working to provide youth with opportunities for meaningful engagement, skill building, and emotional and social development.
Position Overview
This is a full time position (M-F 8:00-5:00) offered through BAYAC AmeriCorps. Positions begin in August 2016 and end in July 2017. AmeriCorps Members spend 36 hours a week (Monday-Thursday, and ½ day Friday) at the Berkeley High School Health Center, and 4 hours a week (1/2 day Fridays) with a team of other AmeriCorps Members.
The Health Education AmeriCorps Members provide individual, classroom and campus based health education and counseling services and assist with implementation of a peer education program to Berkeley High School and Berkeley Technology Academy students. Working at the school based, the interns provide:
CLINICAL HEALTH EDUCATION SERVICES during one-on-one appointments
- Complete psychosocial assessment of teen clients
- Drug, tobacco, and alcohol education and prevention
- Basic nutrition and physical fitness information
- Birth control education and counseling
- Pregnancy test counseling
- STD/HIV prevention, testing, and education
COMMUNITY & CAMPUS OUTREACH
- Weekly campus fliering to encourage students to access health center services
- Presentations to classrooms regarding health center services
- School and community outreach activities regarding a variety of health issues
- Planning and attending large-scale campus events (i.e. World AIDS Day, Health & Wellness Fair, and others)
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work as part of the health education team to provide one-on-one health education appointments at Berkeley High School Health Center and Berkeley Technology Academy (topics include: birth control options counseling, pregnancy testing, STD/HIV testing, nutrition education, alcohol, tobacco, and drug education and prevention)
- Participate in the implementation of an assets based youth development program training Berkeley High School students to be peer health educators
- Attend weekly health education team meetings & monthly health center staff meetings
- Assist staff with planning and implementing large-scale campus events (i.e. World AIDS Day, Health & Wellness Fair, and more)
- Conduct classroom presentations at Berkeley High School and Berkeley Technology Academy
- Assist in planning and implementing campus outreach campaigns
- Basic medical assisting including taking vitals and rooming health center clients
- Greet and welcome clients at the front desk of the health center
- Keep accurate records of daily appointments and log those records into a computer database
- Other responsibilities will vary based on interest and experience of applicants and clinic needs
Qualifications
- U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or a lawful permanent resident of the United States
- At least 17 years old
- Ability to work full-time (40 hours/week)
- Desire to work with young people
- 2 or 4-year college degree preferred
- Experience working with young people and an understanding of health education issues and outreach strategies
- Spanish bilingual or multilingual preferred
- Successful completion of TB test and Live Scan/fingerprinting (upon hire)
