Job Description
The Senior Counsel, Legal Services will be responsible for managing professional liability claims, focusing on healthcare-related matters. This role requires strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills to ensure efficient claim resolution while supporting the organization's mission and reputation.
Key Responsibilities
- Focus on risk management, understanding the unique nature of each claim's facts, law, company philosophy, and reputational risk to help set and guide defense strategy.
- Conduct state-specific and jury verdict research related to each claim to support defense efforts.
- Set accurate case reserves.
- Review and assist with responses to pleadings, discovery, motions, releases, and other legal documents.
- Research potential expert witnesses, including reviewing CVs, IDEX, and prior testimony reports.
- Interact with plaintiff's counsel, defense counsel, employees, and witnesses.
- Provide support in preparation for mediation, depositions, and trials.
- Utilize litigation case management software and other tools to ensure accurate case file notes and documents are maintained.
Requirements

- Five (5) – eight (8) years of hands-on file management experience in a law firm or in-house health care environment focused on professional, general liability, and employment matters.
- Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Must thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume environment with the ability to shift priorities.
- Professional dedication to and personal passion to support a non-profit health care organization and its employees in defense of claims.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work.
- Understanding of clinical and legal terminology with the ability to apply it in a common-sense fashion to the unique facts of each case.
- Strong research and analytical skills for identifying issues and the ability to 'think outside the box.'
- Ability to practically understand case facts, risks, and apply state-specific laws/trends to help guide strategy and assist in the prompt and efficient resolution of claims.
- Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills to interact with all levels of employees and external counsel.
- Mastery of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook programs, along with matter management software.
- Ability to read, write, and effectively communicate in English.
