Position Purpose:
Bayer is looking for a Human Factors engineer who can independently initiate, plan and lead studies for simple and complex electro-mechanical and software devices. As a member of the Center of Excellence Human Factors Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to work on various products across multiple imaging modalities in the Bayer Radiology portfolio, where user interaction is a crucial element for the success of the products. You will work with cross-functional product development teams to collaborate and create customer-focused solutions that meet user needs. Ideal candidates have 2 years of proven experience in the Human Factors Engineering field, and are willing to travel approximately 25% of the time per year, both domestically and internationally. This role is hybrid, where it is expected that at least 33% of your time is based at the Bayer Indianola campus in Pittsburgh, PA.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- This position requires that you spend at least 33% of the year on-site at the Bayer Indianola, PA. location;
- Follow a human factors/usability engineering process as required by National and International regulatory bodies and design and conduct appropriate evaluations to validate new medical devices and changes to currently-fielded medical devices;
- Understand user centered design and human factors principles and develop, retrieve and communicate suitable ergonomic data to support design teams in detailed product development and requirements definitions;
- Develop User Interface Evaluation Plans, detailed Use Error Analyses, Usability Evaluation Protocols and Reports for user research activities, Formative and Summative Evaluations, and Usability Engineering Reports;
- Participate/lead ergonomic and different types of usability evaluations to support New Product Development's on electro-mechanical, disposables and graphic user interface-type user interfaces, with a focus on safety and usability;
- Independently conduct usability evaluations and dry-runs with internal experts and external clinical customers nationally and/or internationally, analyze and document study findings, and communicate findings to development teams;
- Coordinate participant recruitment efforts prior to user evaluations;
- Coordinate shipping logistics associated with interactive meetings and evaluations with clinical customers on-site or at clinical sites, nationally and/or internationally;
- Capture detailed observations and user feedback, prioritize user feedback, and assist the team in driving usability findings to resolution;
- Provide recommendations based on human factors principles and identify areas of improvement and recommend potential improvements to complex electromechanical and disposable devices;
- Participate in cross-functional product development teams, technical/design reviews and documentation reviews;
- Adapt to rapidly changing workloads to meet timelines, and assess priority based on impact to overall business needs;
- Effectively present complex technical information to an audience of varied expertise/level for guidance, education and decision-making.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in an engineering discipline: Industrial Engineering, Bio-Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. OR, Bachelor's Degree in psychology/sociology and at least 2 years of full-time relevant work experience or equivalent;
- Ability to communicate user feedback and translate into concept improvements;
- Ability to travel nationally and/or internationally is required: ~ 25% (varies depending on project assignments)
- Exposure and hands-on experience with the product development process as it relates to medical devices;
- Experience with usability research in the clinical/medical area;
- Knowledge of basic human factors principles and ergonomic databases;
- Hands-on experience with one or more user evaluation techniques.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Understanding of the medical device industry and applicable National and International Human Factors-related Standards and Guidelines pertaining to medical devices;
- Working experience in an FDA-regulated environment following Quality Systems Regulations and knowledge of documentation best practices;
- Understanding of Human Factors principles, biomechanics and ergonomic aspects pertaining to medical device design and user interaction;
- Experience with use error analysis, root cause analysis and usability testing;
- Ability to sketch and communicate ideas visually;
- Demonstrated experience with methods and tools of project management and ability to manage timelines and ambiguity;
- Proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and video editing software;
- Ability to troubleshoot and make quick knowledge and experience guided decisions;
- Strong technical writing skills, oral communication skills and presentation skills;
- Detail-oriented in all forms of communication;
- Outside-the-box thinker;
- Strong ability to plan and prioritize simple and complex activities;
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to partner well, good team player;
- Shows initiative in keeping abreast of literature, new trends and networks with colleagues in field of interest;
- Non-English language skill discipline.
