Scientist I - Precision Cardiology, Molecular Biology/Biochemistry

Bayer has an opening for a Scientist to join the Precision Cardiology Team in Cambridge, MA. This is a unique collaboration where scientists from academia and industry work together in interdisciplinary teams to identify and validate molecular targets for cardiovascular diseases, with the goal of advancing novel therapeutics to the clinic to benefit patients.

We are looking for a researcher with broad molecular and cellular biology experience to join our In Vitro Cluster and take initiative in the design and execution of functional disease-modeling assays and helping bring early project ideas into our drug discovery pipeline. Specifically, the candidate will design and conduct experimental research studies at the bench and contribute to target identification and validation efforts.

Your Tasks And Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of this Scientist I role are to:

  • Lead novel target proposals and experimental validation to support growth of our early cardiovascular portfolio and bring an understanding of the role of the immune system in cardiac homeostasis and disease;
  • Design and execute on functional cellular assays using human iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes and/or relevant primary or engineered cell lines;
  • Employ various biochemical, molecular biology or cellular analytical techniques to support target validation activities;
  • Develop research plans for executing strategy, operate and maintain equipment, and perform laboratory work, with complete independence;
  • Engage in close collaboration with scientists and technical staff of the In Vitro Cluster based at the German sites to share knowledge, drive progress and stimulate innovation;
  • Prepare and update experimental protocols;
  • Independently perform data analysis and effectively interpret results;
  • Lead publication of results, prepare reports and presentations at both internal and external forums;
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues and interdisciplinary teams both within Bayer and with external collaborators;
  • Serve as a liaison to our Drug Discovery colleagues to enable a fast transition between target validation and druggability assessment;
  • Assess external targets and programs to understand the competitive landscape and identify potential opportunities for collaboration.

Who You Are

Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Biology (Cellular, Molecular or Developmental Biology), Biochemistry, or related life scientific field;
  • A background in cardiorenal disease biology;
  • Experience in cellular assay development and proficiency with standard assay formats in primary and cultured cells;
  • Expertise in standard molecular biology and biochemistry techniques;
  • Experience or exposure to the drug discovery process or the application of different modalities to modulate drug targets (eg. small molecules, antibodies, siRNA);
  • Experience with transcriptomics technologies/methods and their application to drug target identification and validation would be beneficial;
  • Track record of working on complex problems, and ability to integrate data from multiple disciplines;
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing, and collaboration skills to work in a team-oriented, matrix environment, and the ability to work through conflicts;
  • Demonstrate outstanding personal initiative, communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team;
  • Ability to adapt to and effectively manage changes in a fast paced and dynamic environment;
  • A passion for science and sense of urgency to find new therapies for patients.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 0-2 years of research Post-Doc experience (in industry or academia)
