Bayfield County seeks a dedicated and experienced individual to serve as a Summer Youth Adventures Leader with the Superior Adventures program managed by the University of Wisconsin-Extension, helping youth to discover and thrive in the beauty of Bayfield County! The ideal candidate will have personal and/or educational experience working with youth; and demonstrate maturity, professionalism, and the ability to work independently while managing diverse responsibilities. This role requires strong leadership skills, excellent judgment, and a proactive approach to problem-solving and safety to create a positive and enriching experience for program participants.
The Summer Youth Adventures Leader will collaborate with UW-Extension and community partners to organize, promote and lead safe and engaging place-based Outdoor Education and/or community service experiences for local youth, primarily ages 10-15. Outings will create connections to unique, local recreational opportunities while fostering communication and leadership skills among participants. Examples of potential programming may include single-track bike rides on local trails, sea kayaking, canoeing, sailing, climbing, and day hikes to local points of interest. The Summer Youth Adventures Leader may assist with 4-H Camp Counselor training, 4-H Summer Camp, and other youth programs as requested. Professional development opportunities and educational resources provided through UW-Extension.
This flexible full-time position starts either in late May or June and goes into August or until the allotted number of hours (up to 480) are completed.
Examples of Duties

- Provide leadership to the Superior Adventures summer program in collaboration with UW-Extension and community partners.
- Identify and develop a schedule for appropriate and engaging summer outings: define learning and skill objectives, conduct risk assessments, and organize logistics.
- Work closely with office staff on promotion/marketing and registration.
- Lead regular small-group (5-10 participants) adventure outings for youth living in Bayfield County.
- Document participation and feedback from youth to evaluate impact, successes and areas for improvement.
- Complete online 4-H youth development trainings through UW-Extension.
- Provide organizational and educational support for 4-H Summer Camp and other youth programs as requested.
Qualifications
- At least 18 years old and have some college experience.
- Must be independently motivated, responsible, detail-oriented, flexible and have effective interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrate a commitment to fostering an inclusive environment by recognizing, respecting, and adapting to individual differences and diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to schedule occasional evening and weekend work as regular part of position duties.
- Valid driver’s license required; must be comfortable driving the county van.
- Competence in Microsoft 365 and Teams software applications.
- Leadership experience working with youth and Outdoor Education (preferred)
- Certifications in First Aid and Lifeguarding (preferred)
- Personal, educational or professional experience leading groups in canoeing, hiking, and/or other outdoor adventure experiences (preferred)
