What are the responsibilities and job description for the Highway Department Patrolman position at Bayfield County?
Assist in the maintenance of all County and State Highways where assigned. Have working knowledge of operation of the following equipment: mower tractors, front end-loaders, motorgraders, chipper, chain saw, brush saws, various size trucks from pickup to quad-axle dump trucks. The current vacancy will be based in Iron River, WI.• Roadway maintenance and construction.
• Roadside drainage operations.
• Mowing and brushing operations.
• Haul materials for maintenance and construction.
• Plow snow and ice removal operations.
• Maintain cleanliness and maintenance of highway department buildings, grounds and equipment.
• Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of highway operations including the operation of mower tractors, front end-loaders, motorgraders, chipper, chain saws, brush saws, various size trucks from pickup to quad-axle dump trucks.
• Must produce an accurate account of all materials used, time expended and machinery used in each area of work accomplished.
• Must have knowledge of or ability to handle various manual tasks from pavement maintenance, roadside drainage, shoulder maintenance, and the operation of snow and ice removal equipment.
. Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, agencies and the public.
.Knowledge of and experience using personal protective equipment and safety gear.• Must possess or obtain within 60 days of employment a State of Wisconsin CDL Class A driver's license with air brake endorsement.
• Telephone or pager device as all employees are subject to 24 hour call-out.
• At least 3 years previous experience in road construction and maintenance preferred.
• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Successfully pass a physical examination, CDL drug and alcohol screening.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time.
..Ability to sit for extended periods of time. Get in and out of equipment.
• Able to lift up to 75 pounds.
• Ability to walk on uneven terrain, climb down banks.
.Ability to push wheel barrow up slopes.
Ability to shovel, pound and level various materials.
• Ability to work in diverse weather conditions including heat, heavy rain, ice and snow.
.Visual ability requires close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color vision.
• Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts.
• Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock and vibration.
• Noise level in the work environment is generally moderate to loud.
• Work in inclement weather.
