Position Summary

Demonstrates through clinical practice a clear understanding of sterile techniques and has a working knowledge of the specialized instrumentation and equipment required for a variety of specialty procedures. Demonstrates competency to operate all specialtyinstruments, supplies, and equipment to at least one tertiary specialty service. Performs patient care under the direction of the physician and supervision of the lead nurse in an ambulatory care setting.

Responsibilities

Responsible for the maintenance of an orderly surgical field and for consistently passing instruments and supplies quickly andefficiently to the surgeon. Able to anticipate and prioritize the needs of the various steps associated with the procedure. Takes part in sponge, needle and instruments counts as dictated by the procedure. Responsible for maintaining the surgical specimen in a manner which identifies and preserves them for pathology evaluation. Assists in ordering and stocking of specialty supplies under the direction of management staff and departmental guidelines In collaboration with a Registered Nurse, serves as a technical subject matter expert for at least one tertiary specialty. Provides scrub services for major procedures in cardiovascular and thoracic (independently with high physician satisfaction). Prepares and conducts technical performance oriented training related to specialty service. Serves as a preceptor to perioperative personnel rotating through the scrub roles associated with their specialty(s) and /orsecond circulates on major tertiary procedures. Collaborates with surgeons and proactively addresses case needs when performing duties in either the scrub or secondcirculator roles. In collaboration with the clinical leadership, assists in work flow process improvement activities, contributes to organizationaleffectiveness, and demonstrates career growth and development. Transports and delivers items, equipment, and medications (excluding controlled substances and IV chemotherapy drugs)throughout the facility. May have limited access to areas storing medications. Embraces and participates in quality initiatives, goal attainment, and clinical outcome process improvement activities Supports and demonstrates effective and professional communication with patients and family members Works collaboratively with the administrative and operations staff. Gathers patient data through interview and observation. Assists the physician by acting as a liaison on behalf of the patient to schedule, provide patient with scheduling information toobtain specialty testing, and/or specialty physician consultation. Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, stateand local standards. Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education/Training High school graduate or equivalent; and Successful completion of:o Surgical Technology training program; oro U. S. Military Medical Core Training; oro Completion of an equivalent on-the-job training program with seven (7) years recent surgical tech experience.

 

Licensure/Certification National certification as Surgical Technologist from one of the following is required:o Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)(www.nbstsa.org) – renewed every 4 years; oro Tech in Surgery - Certified by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) (www.ncctinc.com) – renewedannually. Maintains current BLS/HealthCare Provider certification.

 

Experience One (1) year surgical technician experience in a tertiary service. Technical expert in a least one tertiary service. Competency to scrub major procedures in cardiovascular and thoracic specialty services.
