Emergency Medicine (CDU schedules are a combination of days and nights, 7a-7p and 7p-7a, and 12 shifts per month. The ED works 9 to 10 hour shifts, a combination of days and nights, and est. 16 shifts per month)

APC General Summary:
Works in collaboration with an emergency department physician to assess the physical and/or mental needs of patients admitted to the emergency department. Orders, interprets, and records results of clinical tests and reports results to physicians. Prescribes medications and makes recommendations for other therapeutic forms of treatment. Emergency Department APC’s should collaborate with emergency department physicians and physicians of other specialties as well as other members of the emergency department staff. Emergency physicians APC’s must evaluate a wide variety of ailments, sometimes with little to no information. They must be able to think and act quickly to make a tentative diagnosis and determine the appropriate course of treatment.
APC Responsibilities:
1. Provide patient medical services, which are limited to services within the training and experience of the practitioner.
2. Obtain complete, detailed and accurate medical histories on patients.
3. Performs health assessments and physical examinations and record all pertinent patient data.
4. Collaborate with physicians and other health professionals
5. Interpret and integrate patient data for the purposes of establishing presumptive diagnoses and the general workup of the patient by ordering appropriate laboratory studies, radiology and other special examinations or diagnostic procedures required for the evaluation of illness.
6. Evaluate and disposition patients in the emergency department in a productive manner with a good flow and a goal of 2.0 patients per hour.
7. Suture wounds, perform allowed procedures, prescribe, and administer drugs in accordance with federal and state laws and standards of practice.
8. Provide instructions and guidance and counseling regarding medical care matter to patients and their families.
9. Triage patients and complete call backs as instructed.
10. Complete patient charts in EPIC within 72 hours of seeing patient
11. Provide monthly schedule availability within time frame established.
12. Maintain licenses, required certificates and education; including Bayhealth annual education.
13. Review all medical (laboratory and radiology) reports concerning patients.
14. Attend staff and committee meetings unless working, post night or late evening shifts or have an excused absence.
15. All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
APC Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:
- Education: Bachelor Degree Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant; Additional education may be required for some specialty areas and has passed the boards.
- Credential(s): Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant-Certified; Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant - Controlled Substances Registration
- Experience: Required: Can be part of core PA or APN training.
