General Summary:
The Chief Dialysis technician is a health care provider whose patient care responsibility is to provide specific technical skills that assist the professional nurse and/or physician during renal replacement therapy and the immediate post-treatment phase. Additional responsibilities include the maintenance and repair of all water purification systems to ensure that the requirements of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) quality water standards are met. Also, the Chief Dialysis Technician works as a collaborative partner with Bayhealth’s Clinical Engineering team for the maintenance and repair of all hemodialysis machines and reverse osmosis systems / devices.
Responsibilities:
1. Maintains and follows established departmental policies and procedures, standards of care, performance improvement plan, safety guidelines, environmental and infection prevention guidelines.
2. Provides patient care under the direction of the Dialysis Registered Nurse. This includes: setting up dialysis machines, mixing dialysate, priming dialyzers, transporting patients, vital signs (including weight), peripheral cannulation, connecting patients to dialysis machines and inspecting equipment settings, starting blood flow pump, inspecting pressures, calculating fluid removal, monitoring for adverse reactions or malfunctions, and documenting as appropriate. All clinical care by the Dialysis Technician is delegated and supervised by a Dialysis RN.
3. Maintains all hemodialysis water treatment purification systems for both campuses including central and portable reverse osmosis machines/systems. Performs monthly disinfection of the water system and completes monthly water quality testing. Maintains accurate records of water testing and system and machine maintenance. Reports results to Dialysis Manager.
4. Works collaboratively with Clinical Engineering on the repair and preventative maintenance of hemodialysis machines and reverse osmosis systems/ devices.
5. Works collaboratively with Materials Management to order supplies and equipment needed to facilitate an effective dialysis program.
6. Acts as an educational resource relative to water purification and water quality testing as required by federal and state regulations.
7. Assists in the development of policies related to dialysis water purification and water quality.
8. All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:
- Education: High School Diploma or GED; Certificate Program Dialysis
- Credential(s): CCHT within 18 months of hire if not already obtained
- Experience: Required: One year of active working experience as a Dialysis Technician.
