General Summary:
The Emergency Department (ED) Technician II involves the delivery of clinical nursing assistant services to patients. The ED Technician II functions under the supervision of a licensed registered nurse or therapist; they provide care, which does not require the judgment and skills of a licensed professional. After competency verification, the ED Technician II may deliver patient care services to the neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations. The care may include, but is not limited to, the following: obtaining and recording in the EHR, blood pressure, pulse, temperature and pulse oximetry, drawing blood, EKG, transporting patients, obtain urine and stool specimens, perform point of care testing, assist with ED procedures consistent with the scope of the employee’s position, measure and assist in applying sling, cervical collar, splints and crutches, bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, ambulating, transferring, feeding, observing, and reporting the general well-being of the person(s) to whom they are providing care.
Responsibilities:
1. Provide general basic nursing care, such as positioning patients, lifting and turning, assisting in use of bedpan, commode, urinal or bathroom, and weighing.
2. Perform routine, uncomplicated treatment procedures including enemas, application of hot and cold compresses, holding limbs for casting, wound cleansing, taking vital signs including orthostatic vital signs and rectal temperatures and splinting of extremities. Collects and records intake and output, and chaperones pelvic and rectal examinations.
3. Set up for suturing and procedures, using sterile technique; dismantles procedure set, caring for soiled instruments safely and correctly.
4. Accurately complete requisitions for ordered exams, including lab, imaging, cardiopulmonary, and other requisitions as required.
5. Immediately report any observed changes in condition or behavior of patients and documents any care given in an acceptable medical legal fashion. Immediately reports any unusual incidents.
6. Transport patients using wheelchair or stretcher within hospital and to/from vehicles; Assist those patients requiring help with ambulation.
7. Restocks linen and supplies to exam rooms; fills blanket warmer and IV trays; provides general cleaning, including emptying trash, straightening waiting area, etc. Washes and changes stretcher or exam table linen and empties dirty laundry.
8. Performance of venipuncture for the purpose of insertion of IV Catheter and the withdrawal of blood and to monitor the patient’s condition before, during and after the withdrawal of blood.
9. Ability to read and interpret documents such as doctors’ orders, drug names, and lab tests.
10. Administer maintenance intravenous fluids per provider order, under the direction of the primary care Registered Nurse.
11. All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities
Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:
- Education: High School Diploma or GED; Certificate Program Paramedic Or coursework/certificate program for Emergency Medical Technician.
- Credential(s): Basic Life Support; Paramedic; National Registry of EMT or Paramedic. If hired before 2023, LPN licensure is acceptable.
