Position Summary:
Bayport Laboratories is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Microbiologist to join our Quality Control team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in microbiology, a minimum of 5 years of experience in a microbiology laboratory setting (preferably within the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, or personal care industry), and a thorough understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). The Microbiologist will be responsible for performing microbiological testing on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished goods to ensure product safety and compliance with quality standards.
Responsibilities:
- Perform routine microbiological testing of raw materials, bulk formulations, and finished cosmetic products, including but not limited to:
- Total Aerobic Microbial Count (TAMC)
- Total Yeast and Mold Count (TYMC)
- Detection of specified microorganisms (e.g., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans)
- Preservative Efficacy Testing (PET) / Challenge Testing
- Water activity testing
- Develop, validate, and implement microbiological test methods and procedures in accordance with USP, CTFA, ISO, and other relevant guidelines.
- Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records, including test results, observations, and deviations.
- Analyze microbiological data, interpret results, and generate comprehensive reports.
- Investigate out-of-specification (OOS) results and implement corrective and preventative actions (CAPAs).
- Participate in environmental monitoring programs for manufacturing and laboratory areas.
- Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, ensuring proper calibration and functionality.
- Prepare and sterilize culture media, reagents, and other necessary materials.
- Adhere to strict laboratory safety procedures and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Stay current with industry best practices, regulatory requirements, and advancements in microbiological testing within the cosmetics industry.
- Assist in the training of other laboratory personnel on microbiological procedures.
- Participate in internal and external audits as required.
- Collaborate with other departments, including Research & Development and Quality Assurance, to ensure product quality and safety.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, or a related scientific discipline. A Master's degree is a plus.
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience working as a Microbiologist in a relevant industry (cosmetics, pharmaceutical, personal care, food).
- Strong knowledge of microbiological principles, techniques, and methodologies.
- Proficiency in performing various microbiological tests, including microbial enumeration and identification.
- Experience with aseptic techniques and maintaining a sterile work environment.
- Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
- Understanding of relevant regulatory guidelines (e.g., USP, CTFA, ISO 22716).
- Excellent aseptic technique and attention to detail.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is a plus.
