BASIC FUNCTION
The Logistics Specialist will be responsible for managing and optimizing our logistics operations across rail, trucking, marine, and export channels. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with Railtrac, SAP, and other business systems to ensure efficient and cost-effective transportation of goods. This role will have a strong emphasis on railroad operations and shipment management.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Railcar Management
- Track and trace Bayport’s loaded hopper cars in transit; work with railroads and others to resolve issues
- Communicate delays internally and with 3rd party Sales Representative
- Monitor and communicate changes to transit times based on transit performance or other unplanned operational issues (environmental events, strikes, etc.)
- Execute diversion and re-bill requests
- Manage individual hopper cars by request via “HOT” list
- Ensure empty railcars are traveling under current billing
- Manage claims process with railroads, including resolution, funds recovery, etc.
- Assist in customer supply reliability complaint investigations and mitigations
- Monitor site yard and storage-in-transit usage versus capacity; work with railroads and hopper car storage providers to move empty and loaded hoppers cars as needed
- Escalate issues with both Commercial and Operations Management as needed
- Monitor equipment availability
Railcar Data Maintenance
- Maintain railcar master data in SAP, Railtrac and any other applicable systems including railcar characteristics and preventative maintenance plans
- Assist freight payables with resolving invoice issues for all logistic related services (rail rate discrepancies, empty hopper car movements, demurrage, etc.); work issues with carriers as needed
Continuous Improvement
- Develop and manage hopper car reports for key stakeholders to assist in railcar tracking and delivery performance improvements
- Analyze gaps in service, recommend solutions, and implement agreed upon actions
- Provide back up support the Logistics Operations team.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in logistics, with a focus on rail operations a plus
- Proficiency in Railtrac, SAP, and other business systems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
- Knowledge of relevant regulations and industry standards.
PREFERRED QUALIFICAITONS/EXPERIENCE
- Experience in managing fleet operations with Class 1 railroad tools, including BNSF, UP, NS, CSXT, KCS, CP, and CN.
PHYSICAL CAPACITY REQUIREMENTS
This position requires:
- Follow safety requirements (goggles, PPE, etc.) when inside plant environment
- Walk safely in and around industrial areas
- Speak publicly (such as at employee meetings)
- Sit for extended periods of time at a computer and work with computer-based data
