What are the responsibilities and job description for the Technician, Laboratory - II position at BAYPORT POLYMERS LLC?
BASIC FUNCTION
The lab technician II will work in the Quality Control Laboratory or quality supported areas, involved in one of the following activities: product measurement/quality control and management of laboratory chemical inventory. This position will assist with setup and running of test programs, maintenance of test equipment, maintain a clean work area, and lab equipment. This position support plant operations by conducting laboratory analyses on samples. This work is performed via 12-hour shifts and day to night rotations. Overtime work is necessary from time to time to support the needs of the business.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Inspect, test, and troubleshoot lab instrumentation and interpret results
• Perform routine and non-routine analyses, including control samples and calibration checks, without supervision
• Operate and maintain lab instrumentation
• Incumbent receives training but uses some specialized skills where technical experience can be applied to assigned tasks
• Promote and support a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible work environment. Follow all safety rules and policies
• Assists more experienced Technicians, Technologists, and professionals in technical assignments.
• Assist in training less experienced Technicians
• Assignments are received in specific terms and are checked for completeness and accuracy. Uses standard procedures in completing assignments
• Inspect and monitor operating components of lab instrumentation
• Practice good housekeeping
• Manage and maintain work area inventory
• Record results legibly or make computer entry accurately for use by Lab personnel. Critical or off-spec results must be reported to Operations immediately. All work sheets and applicable control charts must be properly maintained
• Coordinate activities closely with production and loading personnel
• Communicate proper shift relief at shift change
• Responsible to change necessary gas cylinders and dispose of all lab waste according to procedure
• Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
• Four-year degree in a related science (other degree may be considered based on candidate and candidate experience) or successfully completion of a laboratory technician training program at a community college or technical school (equal to a two-year Associates degree and 2 year’s relevant experience), or six years of lab technician experience in a petrochemical environment
• High proficiency in Microsoft applications (such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to read, write and speak in English
• Ability to work weekends, holidays and respond to callouts on a non-routine basis
• Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work as part of a team
• Experience handling hazardous materials in a laboratory setting
• Experience troubleshooting lab instrumentation and interpreting results
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE
• 3 – 5 years’ experience in a petrochemical lab environment
• Previous experience writing and/or editing methods
• Experience with teaching other technicians
• Experience working with lab instrumentation
• Good working knowledge of SAP
• Experience with wet chemistry, physical testing, and analytical instruments
• Ability to drive a forklift
PHYSICAL CAPACITY REQUIREMENTS
This position requires the incumbent to:
• Follow safety requirements for the role
• Wear mandatory PPE (steel-toed boots, noise protection, etc.) when inside plant environment, or where directed by signage, including the use of a respirator
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
• Must demonstrate fine and gross hand manipulation including pinching, gripping, turning, and keyboarding
• Must be able to respond to visual and audible alarms
• Lift up to 50 pounds
• Ability to climb 6’ ladder and step stool
• Ability to climb 25 flights of stairs
• Walk safely in and around industrial areas on uneven or elevated surfaces
• Work under deadline pressure within an environment that demands attention to safety and detail
• Sit, stand, and reach with hands or arms for extended periods of time
• Walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and crouching are required
• Be able to work in the presence of odors typical of petroleum or petrochemicals without allergic reactions or nausea when such odors are within OSHA-designated permissible exposure limits (PELs)
