Position Title: Marine Technician
Job Summary: A Marine Technician is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and operation of mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems aboard marine vessels. The technician ensures that all systems function efficiently and safely, adhering to industry standards and safety regulations. The role may involve diagnosing faults, conducting inspections, performing routine maintenance, and repairing equipment to keep marine vessels in optimal working condition.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintenance and Repair:
- Perform regular maintenance and repair on engines, propulsion systems, electrical systems, and other essential equipment aboard marine vessels.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose faults in both mechanical and electronic systems.
- Perform routine checks and services, including oil changes, engine tuning, and hull inspections.
- Repair or replace defective parts and components of engines, generators, and other mechanical or electrical systems.
System Inspections:
- Inspect all vessel systems, including propulsion, electrical, and safety equipment, ensuring they are in proper working condition.
- Conduct safety inspections to meet regulatory compliance and industry standards.
- Complete written inspection reports and document work performed.
Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:
- Use specialized tools, diagnostic equipment, and manuals to identify and resolve mechanical and electrical issues.
- Conduct diagnostic tests on systems and equipment to ensure operational efficiency.
Electrical & Electronic Systems:
- Work on electrical wiring, navigational systems, communication equipment, and control systems to ensure safe vessel operations.
- Test, repair, and install electrical components, including circuit boards, fuses, sensors, and lighting.
Safety and Compliance:
- Ensure all safety equipment, such as life-saving apparatus, fire suppression systems, alarms, and safety lights, are operational.
- Ensure all tasks meet regulatory compliance with maritime safety and environmental standards.
Installation and Upgrades:
- Install new systems and equipment as needed, including engines, generators, or safety devices.
- Upgrade or retrofit existing systems to improve vessel performance, efficiency, and compliance with new regulations.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and replacements performed.
- Provide detailed reports to supervisors or clients regarding system status, operational issues, and safety concerns.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in marine systems or engineering is preferred.
- Certifications: Certifications such as Marine Engine Technician (MET), Marine Electrical Technician, or similar, depending on region and specialization.
- Experience: Previous experience in marine maintenance or related fields, with knowledge of both mechanical and electrical systems is a bonus but not needed.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with tools, diagnostic equipment, and software related to marine systems.
- Problem-Solving: Strong ability to identify problems and implement effective solutions quickly.
- Physical Fitness: Ability to work in physically demanding conditions, including confined spaces, working at heights, and lifting heavy equipment.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to ensure that all equipment meets required specifications and regulatory standards.
- Communication: Clear communication skills for reporting issues, following safety protocols, and working with the crew.
Preferred Qualifications: but not a requirement
- Experience working on specific types of vessels (e.g., commercial ships, luxury yachts, or submarines).
- Familiarity with advanced maritime systems, including GPS navigation, radar, and communication equipment.
- Knowledge of environmental regulations and sustainable marine practices.
Work Environment:
- Workshop and outdoor environments.
- May require occasional travel to customer locations or RV parks.
