Position Title: Director of Dental  

Department: Dental  

Reports to: Chief Clinical Officer  

FLSA Classification: Exempt  

Compensation: $350,000.00-$375,000.00/Annually  

 

Background: 

Fifty years ago, four Black American mothers, aided by 25 volunteer Black physicians, launched Baywell Health, formally known as West Oakland Health amid the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. It immediately became an anchor for the Black communities in West Oakland, East Oakland, and Berkeley for healthcare, health education, food and housing programs, and voter registration. The clinic became a spark that transformed healthcare advocacy in California and the nation. 

 

Baywell Health’s purpose is to be the trusted hub advancing the Bay Area Black community’s health and dignity. We work to do this by providing high-quality, comprehensive adult and family medicine, pediatric health care, dental care, optometry, podiatry, behavioral health services, and pharmacies at two locations while also being a space where medical care is our central but not the sole aim. We aim to be a place where community members also receive assistance on things that will make our community socially, economically, emotionally, and physically healthy. 

 

Job Summary: 

Under the general supervision of the Chief Clinical Officer, the Director of Dental has the responsibility of administering, maintaining, and expanding dental program operations for Baywell Health. The Director of Dental supervises the dental staff and represents the dental staff to the Chief Clinical Officer. The Director of Dental provides dental practice advice and counsel to the Chief Clinical Officer.    

 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Provides direct patient care.  

  • Provides leadership to team members assuring quality patient care, appropriate distribution of work and efficient patient care.  

  • Updates all patient visit information into Electronic Dental System (EPIC/WISDOM).  

  • Develops libraries and vendor billings.  

  • Presents reports on health and quality assurance matters to Chief Clinical Officer and participates in the clinical Quality Assurance Committee.  

  • Assist in the recruitment and selection of professional staff.  

  • Conducts performance evaluation for personnel.  

  • Oversees and troubleshoots patient flow issues from beginning to end of patient visit, phone calls, message routing, and other patient flow related systems.  

  • Recommends, approves, and approves coverage for continuing dental education leave requests for professional staff.  

  • Participates in Baywell Health sponsored community events and workshops.  

  • Develops annual budget with management team.  

  • Conducts monthly dental staff meetings.  

  • Interprets clinical data and advises on information technology and data needs, developments, and recommends and conducts special studies of operations.  

  • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with specialists and other health care professionals, developing a referral network.  

  • Participates in professional development activities to keep current trends and practices in healthcare administration (conferences, journals) 

  • Participates in development of long-range strategic plans, governance structure, and objectives for practice management.  

  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

  • May be assigned cross departmental responsibilities.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license. 

 

Education and Experience: 

  • Doctor of Dental Science (D.D.S) degree from an accredited college or university.  

  • A minimum of five (5) years of recent full-clinical experience as a licensed professional dentist. 

  • Administrative, management, monitoring department performance productivity, and budget development experience.  

  • Familiarity with Joint Commission and Health Resources Services Agency rules and other regulatory oversight desired.  

  • Knowledge of public health principles, practices, and community health center clinical practices. 

 

Mental and Physical Requirements:  

  • The pace of Work: High stress, very rapid, and demanding 

  • Concentration: Constant 

  • Standing and Walking Time Required: At least 20% of the time 

  • Sitting and typing: 60% - 70% 

  • Environmental and Health Hazards: Frequent exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common to a clinic environment. 

  • The employee must frequently use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and telephone keyboard and talk or hear. 

  • The employee must occasionally bend, lift and move up to 25 pounds. 

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. 

  • May be required to work in an environment with high noise levels and unpredictable temperature and ventilation.
