Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) Job Description

Position Summary :

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is a highly trained professional who applies principles of behavior analysis to develop, implement, and oversee programs that support individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), developmental disabilities, and other behavioral or psychological challenges. BCBAs work with individuals, families, schools, and organizations to assess behaviors, design interventions, and provide ongoing support to improve quality of life and increase functional skills.

Key Responsibilities :

Behavioral Assessment and Analysis :

Conduct comprehensive functional behavior assessments (FBAs) to identify the antecedents, behaviors, and consequences (the ABCs of behavior).

  • Analyze data from direct observations, interviews, and testing to understand the function of problem behaviors.
  • Use evidence-based tools and methods to assess and measure the severity of behavioral issues, skill deficits, and progress toward treatment goals.

Program Development :

Design individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs) based on the results of the behavioral assessment.

  • Develop positive behavior support strategies that focus on increasing desirable behaviors and decreasing harmful or disruptive behaviors.
  • Create skill-building programs in areas such as communication, social skills, self-care, and academic skills.
  • Use Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) techniques such as reinforcement, prompting, chaining, and shaping to facilitate skill acquisition.
  • Implementation and Training :

Provide training and support to direct care staff, teachers, and family members on how to implement behavioral interventions consistently and effectively.

  • Supervise and mentor Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) and other paraprofessionals in the implementation of behavior plans.
  • Ensure that interventions are being implemented correctly and make adjustments as necessary to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Data Collection and Monitoring :

Collect and analyze data on student or client progress, ensuring that behavior plans are having the intended effects.

  • Use data to make data-driven decisions about the effectiveness of interventions and make adjustments where necessary.
  • Monitor the progress of individuals in real time, ensuring interventions are applied consistently and adjusting strategies to meet evolving needs.
  • Family and Client Support :

Provide regular feedback to families, caregivers, and other stakeholders regarding the progress of behavioral interventions.

  • Offer guidance and support to families in implementing strategies outside of direct intervention sessions, reinforcing generalization of skills.
  • Serve as an advocate for individuals, ensuring they receive the appropriate resources and services.
  • Collaboration with Other Professionals :

Collaborate with other professionals such as teachers, school psychologists, speech and language pathologists, and occupational therapists to ensure holistic care and support.

  • Work with interdisciplinary teams to ensure behavioral interventions align with academic, social, and emotional goals.
  • Attend meetings (e.g., IEPs, team reviews) to discuss client progress and adjust plans as needed.
  • Ethical and Professional Standards :

Adhere to the ethical guidelines established by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) and maintain professional integrity.

  • Ensure confidentiality and maintain appropriate records in compliance with relevant laws and regulations (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA).
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with the latest research and best practices in behavior analysis.
  • Supervision and Case Management :

Supervise and provide feedback to less experienced staff, ensuring they are following behavior intervention plans correctly.

  • Manage a caseload of clients, balancing administrative duties with direct client work.
  • Review and adjust plans in response to client progress or challenges, ensuring interventions remain effective over time.
  • Qualifications : Education :

Master’s degree in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Psychology, Education, or a closely related field.

    Certification :

Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) is required.

  • Ongoing compliance with BACB continuing education requirements.
  • Experience :

Previous experience working with individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), developmental disabilities, or other behavioral concerns.

  • Experience designing, implementing, and supervising behavior intervention programs.
  • Skills :

Strong knowledge of behavior analysis principles, ABA techniques, and data collection methods.

  • Ability to analyze complex behavioral data and develop individualized, effective behavior plans.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with individuals, families, and professionals.
  • Organizational skills to manage a caseload and provide supervision to staff.
  • Capacity to problem-solve and adjust strategies in response to data and client needs.
