JOB SUMMARY
The Occupation Health Nurse responsibilities include assessing job-specific hazards and risks, recommending or implementing health protection measures, providing health counseling, and educating employees and managers regarding the prevention and control of workplace injury and illness.
DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain the health of employees throughout a complete spectrum of care, including treatment of injuries, accidents, and illnesses; developing and implementing preventive health strategies; refers (if necessary); and providing education about occupational health and safety.
- Communicate with employees on preventative measures, injuries, and illnesses.
- May be asked to be available to consult for injuries outside of standards hours.
- Assist in developing procedures to reduce occupational hazards
- Ensure safety and health training is given to staff.
- Conduct regular inspections of sanitation conditions, premises, including all facilities therein, and evaluate the working environment to detect and appraise occupational health hazards and environmental conditions affecting comfort and job efficiency
- Develops, implements, and maintains comprehensive Environmental Occupational Health and Safety (EHS) policies and programs to support operations and to comply with applicable laws and regulations.
- Oversees hazard exposure monitoring and reporting.
- Assist with workers’ compensation claims, disability management, and return-to-work programs.
- Maintain confidential and precise health records for employees, adhering to legal and ethical requirements.
- Perform first aid and CPR in emergency situations.
- Monitor OSHA and work site regulations.
- Evaluate employee fitness for duty.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES
- This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- B.S., R.N. degree required
- 5 years of proven experience as an Occupational Health Nurse
- Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) preferred
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations, DOT regulations and PPE
- 2 years of experience in an animal or primate facility is a plus
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety laws, regulations, and best practices.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent assessment and diagnostic skills to identify and address occupational health risks and issues.
- Proficient in conducting health screenings, immunizations, and administering first aid.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to lift 15 pounds.
- Ability to work for short periods of time in Florida outdoor conditions.
